One student injured in school fight

Security video showed nine, all sophomores, involved in the affray.

CLOVIS — A fight in the parking lot outside Clovis High School on Friday sent one student to the hospital, according to Superintendent Jody Balch.

Security video shows that at 11:35 a.m. in the parking lot behind the band building a verbal and physical altercation took place involving nine students, all sophomores. The melee left a student with a shoulder injury, Balch said.

"One of (the student's) shoulders was either dislocated or got hurt, so the ambulance came and took the child to the hospital," Balch said.

A school official also suffered some kind of medical issue following the fight.

"He was escorting a student involved in the fight to the office and had some sort of personal issue," Balch said.

Balch said he thought the man went home to recover.

Balch said the incident, which prompted two police vehicles and four officers to be dispatched to the school, began due to something involving the social media application Snapchat.

The fight was "broken up by CHS administrators and security prior to the police getting there," Balch said.

Video of the incident posted to Facebook shows several students arguing before multiple scuffles broke out in which students are thrown to the ground, punched and kicked.

Balch said security camera footage was instrumental in determining when the incident occurred and will be used during the school's investigation.

"We'll use it, we'll give a copy to the police, we'll do our discipline and if the police thinks a crime was involved, they'll do their part," Balch said.

Clovis Police spokesman Robbie Telles said an investigation is still ongoing and no charges had been filed as of Friday.
