1977: A 29-yard fourth-quarter field goal was the only score, but it was enough to give the Clovis Wildcats a state football championship over the defending champion Sandia Matadors in a sold-out game in Clovis that was also televised statewide.

Clovis kicker David Nelson put the only points on the board for the Wildcats at the 6:59 mark of the last quarter.

The state championship was Clovis' second in four years, both under Coach Dunny Goode.

1962: Ruby Duran, a teacher from the Texico schools, was selected by the Texico Teachers' Association to be its candidate for New Mexico Teacher of the Year.

Duran was also selected by the Texico Women's Club to be its representative at the Golden Anniversary Gran Senora Ball in Santa Fe, an event being held in honor of New Mexico's 50th anniversary of statehood.

Duran started her career in 1929, teaching grades one through eight, doing janitor work, and carrying water - for which she received an annual salary of $560.

She went on to teach high school math, English, and psychology, and was also a director of counseling and guidance.
