1977: A parade highlighted a week-long Old Fort Days celebration at Fort Sumner.

State Tourist Director David Santillanes Jr. was among dignitaries who participated.

The final day was slated to feature a golf tournament and black-powder shoot.

1977: Curry County Agriculture Extension Agent Billy Dictson was warning area residents about the dangers of herbicides and soil sterilants in yards and gardens.

“It is very tempting to put these type chemicals out to rid an area of weeds,” he wrote, “but one should be very cautious and study the type vegetation in an area of at least 75 feet in all directions.

“Ice cream salt applied to an area can kill trees and shrubs also if the roots get into it.”
