1987: The Clovis Chamber of Commerce decided to weigh in on city weed issues.

The Chamber's board of directors agreed unanimously that the city needed to pass a proposed weed ordinance.

"Surely, we have enough city employees ... when they are out and around, (they) can look at weeds and report those that are too tall," said Board member Sherman Williams.

1987: Newspaper columnist Erma Bombeck was making fun of dieters.

"Dieters are basically dishonest people who cannot be trusted to measure out two ounces of hamburger on a scale or give their right weight on their driver's license," she wrote.

"They will do anything to register less on a scale ... from putting the scale on a shag carpet to removing the fillings from their teeth before stepping on it."
