Weekly New Mexico fishing report — Nov. 1

New Mexico report

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and New Mexico Department of Game & Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake — Fishing was fair using silver Rapalas from the bank for walleye. We had no reports from boaters.

Animas River — Water flow near Aztec on Monday morning was 307 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Albuquerque Area Drains — Our only report was of a small catfish caught on the Belen Drain by an angler using worms.

Bluewater Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Brazos River — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Canjilon Lakes — Closed by the U.S. Forest Service until further notice due to danger from falling trees. The lakes will not reopen in 2016.

Chama River — Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 198 cfs and 212 cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was good using spinners, San Juan worms, worms, PowerBait and salmon eggs for brown and rainbow trout. Fishing below Abiquiu was fair to good using dark colored wooly buggers, egg patterns and worms for trout.

Cochiti Lake — Fishing was slow to fair using jigs and creature baits for smallmouth bass. We had no other reports.

El Vado Lake — Kokanee snagging was slow. We had no other reports.

Fenton Lake — Fishing was fair using Pistol Petes, small spoons, salmon eggs and garlic PowerBait for trout.

Heron Lake — Fishing was slow to fair using salmon peach PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout.

Jackson Lake — Fishing was slow to fair using Pistol Petes under a bubble, PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Jemez Waters — Stream flow on the Jemez River near Jemez Springs on Monday morning was 22 cfs. Fishing on the Jemez was good using salmon eggs, worms, egg patterns, San Juan worms and copper John Barrs for trout. Fishing on the Cebolla was good using small streamers, copper John Barrs, worms and salmon eggs for trout. Fishing on the Rio Guadalupe was fair to good using elk hair caddis flies and worms for brown trout. We had no reports on other streams in the area.

Laguna Del Campo — Closed until next spring.

Lake Farmington — We had no reports from anglers this week. Nonmotorized watercraft are now allowed on Lake Farmington. Fees are $50 for the season or $5 daily.

Manzano Lake — Fishing was very good using PowerBait, salmon eggs and spinners for trout.

Navajo Lake — Fishing was fair using grubs, senkos, swim baits, creature baits and small plastic worms for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was good using swim baits, jerk baits and salmon roe for northern pike and an occasional catfish. Kokanee snagging was very good. Hugo Campos of Albuquerque and five of his friends all snagged limits of kokanee in just a couple of hours. The Pine Main boat ramp and the surrounding 150-foot area is closed to anglers during the salmon snagging season. We had no other reports.

San Gregorio Lake — We had no reports from anglers.

San Juan River — Stream flow as of Monday morning was 413 cfs. Trout fishing through the quality waters section was good using parachute Adams, fluff baetis, comparaduns, chocolate foam-wing emergers, bead-head pheasant tail nymphs, San Juan worms and bunny leeches. Fishing through the bait section was good using spoons, San Juan worms, jerk baits, PowerBait, worms and salmon eggs for trout.

Seven Springs Brood Pond — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Tingley Beach — Fishing at the Central and Youth Ponds was good using salmon eggs, PowerBait and worms for trout. Fishing for all other species was slow. We had no reports from the Bob Gerding Catch and Release Pond.

Trout Lakes — Fishing was good using PowerBait, worms, small spoons and Fisher Chick spinners for trout

Northeast

Charette Lakes — Closed until next spring.

Clayton Lake — Closed until next spring.

Cimarron River — Stream flow below Eagle Nest on Monday was 27 cfs. Fishing was good using worms and salmon eggs for trout. Fishing at the Gravel Pit Lakes was slow with just a few trout caught by anglers using small bead-head nymphs and PowerBait.

Conchas Lake — Fishing was fair using tubes, grubs, swim baits, creature baits and jigs for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was fair using spoons, grubs and blade baits for white bass. Fishing for walleye was slow with just a few caught by anglers using bottom bouncer rigs and vertical jigs. We had no other reports. Fishing pressure was light.

Cowles Ponds — Fishing was good using salmon eggs and PowerBait for trout.

Coyote Creek — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Eagle Rock Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Eagle Nest Lake — Bank fishing was fair using PowerBait for trout and worms for perch. Fishing was fair to good trolling with lightweight tackle for trout. Boaters reported decent snagging for kokanee near the dam. Fishing was slow to fair using popping frogs and swim baits for northern pike.

Gallinas River — Fishing was fair using prince nymphs and salmon eggs for trout.

Hopewell Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Alice — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Maloya — Fishing was good using PowerBait, salmon eggs and Pistol Petes for trout. We had no other reports.

Los Pinos River — Fishing was fair using worms and salmon eggs for trout.

Maxwell Lake 13 — Closed until next spring.

Monastery Lake — Fishing was good using PowerBait, salmon eggs and worms under a bobber for trout.

Morphy Lake — Closed until next spring.

Pecos River — Stream flow on Monday was 31 cfs. Trout fishing was very good using micro mays, San Juan worms, prince nymphs, salmon eggs, PowerBait and worms. Luke Lovato of Albuquerque caught several rainbows and browns including a nice 19-inch brown this past Sunday. He was fishing below Cowles and using a prince nymph.

Red River — Stream flow below the hatchery on Monday was 44 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using salmon eggs, PowerBait, copper John Barrs, egg patterns and spoons for trout.

Red River City Ponds — Fishing was fair using PowerBait, worms and small Kastmasters for trout. The ponds close for the season November 15.

Rio Costilla — Stream flow near Costilla on Monday morning was 4.9 cfs. The irrigation season is over. Mark this one on your calendar for next spring.

Rio Grande — Stream flow on Monday at the Taos Junction Bridge was 256 cfs. Fishing was good using spoons, prince nymphs, San Juan worms, streamers, PowerBait and worms for trout. We had no other reports.

Rio Hondo — Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 10 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Barbara River — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Cruz Reservoir — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Shuree Ponds — Fishing was fair using Pistol Petes and weighted wooly buggers for trout.

Springer Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Storrie Lake — Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Stubblefield Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Ute Lake — Fishing was fair to good using creature baits, tubes and senkos for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was slow early in the week but picked up later in the week for anglers fishing for walleye. They were vertical jigging with blade baits or jig and minnow combinations at 30 to 38 feet. Fishing for white bass was slow. We had no other reports. The surface temp was in the mid 60s.

Winsor Creek — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Southwest

Alumni Pond — Fishing was good using spoons, Pistol Petes, streamers, PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout.

Bear Canyon Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bill Evans Lake — Fishing was good using PowerBait, salmon eggs and spinners for trout. We had no other reports.

Caballo Lake — Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was light.

Elephant Butte Lake — Fishing was fair to good using creature baits, Ned rigs, swim baits, senkos, grubs and tubes for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Walleye fishing was slow but a few were caught by anglers fishing in the Long Point area and using grubs. Fishing was fair using grubs, and Kastmasters for white bass. Manuel Erives of El Paso caught his biggest bass to date on October 31. It was a 3.5-pound largemouth bass and he was using a grub. We had no other reports.

Escondida Lake — Fishing was slow for all species.

Gila River — Stream flow as of Monday morning was 74 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Glenwood Pond — Fishing was good using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout.

Lake Roberts — Fishing was fair to good using worms, PowerBait, salmon eggs and small spoons for trout. We had no other reports.

Percha Dam — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Quemado Lake — Fishing was slow for all species.

Rio Grande — Stream flow below Elephant Butte Monday morning was 0.46 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Snow Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Young Pond — Fishing was very good using streamers, San Juan worms, PowerBait, Pistol Petes, salmon eggs and worms for trout. We had no other reports.

Southeast

Alto Lake — Fishing was fair to good using spoons, Pistol Petes and PowerBait for trout. We had no other reports.

Bataan Lake — Fishing was fair using PowerBait, salmon eggs and spoons for trout. We had no other reports.

Black River — Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 14 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Blue Hole Park Pond — Fishing was good using Pistol Petes under a bubble, PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Bonito Lake — Closed until further notice by the city of Alamogordo due to fire damage.

Bosque Redondo Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bottomless Lakes — The lakes were recently stocked with trout but we had no reports from anglers.

Brantley Lake — Anglers are required to catch and release all fish here as high levels of pesticides have been found in some fish. Fishing was good using Ned rigs, senkos, tubes, crank baits and jerk baits for largemouth bass and white bass. Rick Soto of Santa Fe had a great time here last week catching and releasing a great number of white bass and largemouth bass including a largemouth double caught on a Strike King 6XD. He reported finding the bigger fish at 13 to 17 feet. We had no other reports.

Carlsbad Municipal Lake — Fishing was good using PowerBait and worms for trout. We had no other reports.

Chaparral Park Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

El Rito Creek — Fishing was fair to good using salmon eggs and PowerBait for trout. We had no other reports.

Eunice Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Green Meadow Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Greene Acres Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Grindstone Reservoir — Fishing was good using worms, PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Jal Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Van — Fishing was good using worms, PowerBait and Pistol Petes under a bubble for trout. We had no other reports.

Oasis Park Lake — Fishing was slow for all species.

Pecos River — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Perch Lake — Fishing was good using bead-head nymphs, Pistol Petes and PowerBait for trout. We had no other reports.

Ruidoso River — Stream flow at Hollywood on Monday was 6.1 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Rosa Lake — Fishing was fair to good using swim baits, tubes, senkos, worms and chigger craws for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. We had no other reports.

Sumner Lake — Fishing was good using tubes, craws, swim baits, worms and senkos for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing was fair to good using bottom bouncer night crawler rigs and curly tail grubs for walleye. We had no other reports.
