Eastern New Mexico University’s Future Farmers of America club will be hosting their first Ag Olympic Events Saturday at the Lewis Cooper Rodeo Arena.

The event gives students a chance to sign up as teams and compete for prizes in farm-style contests, including a calf scramble, goat roping, hay bale toss, wheelbarrow race and tug of war.

“We’re hoping the event will serve as a fundraiser and help get the word out about our club,” said Dani Castro, FFA vice president.

Steven Chumbley, assistant professor of agriculture education at ENMU, added the event will serve other purposes.

“It’s a good way to have some fellowship and end out the year on a big note,” he said. “We have such an active ag community around here, and the club wants to share the love for ag.”

Chumbley said it is also meant to get everyone else on campus involved in an ag event.

“There are so many things we do as the ag department, such as hosting judging contests and our career development events we have in the spring, but we were looking for something that everyone can get involved in,” he said. “We will even have staff from different areas on campus participating along with the students.”

Four students can sign up as a team. The fee is $30 to register for the event at the ENMU Ag Building. Teams will need to check in at 9:30 a.m. Contests begin at 10 a.m.
