Meetings Watch: Portales City Council - June 5

The following took place at the Portales City Council meeting Tuesday night:

  • Portales Mayor Sharon King proclaimed June 14 as Flag Day in Portales.
  • U.S. 70 reconstruction project officials gave an update.

Constructors, Inc. Project Manager John Guldemann said there will be no access to Main Avenue from First Street for about two weeks. He said motorists will still have access to Main between First and Second streets from Second Street but it will only allow one way in and one way out to that street so he asked motorists be careful because that area will be congested.

Guldemann also said construction was set back a few days because of weather, but they expect to pour more concrete next week.

  • Parks and Cemetery Supervisor Ronnie Johns gave an update on the Parks and Cemetery Department.
  • King said she received complaints from several people who called the cemetery on a Friday to schedule a burial but were not able to get in contact with anyone. King asked that the department review its policies so that they answer calls during the department's hours.
  • During the public comment section, a Portales woman said she had a problem with the city pool's policy regarding its height restrictions for the baby pool. She said when she takes her two granddaughters to the pool, her 4-year-old granddaughter is too tall for the baby pool but cannot swim alone in the regular pool. She said her other granddaughter is only 20 months and can only go into the baby pool. She asked that the city change the rules so that she can supervise her grandchildren in the same area.

Public Works Director John DeSha said the height requirements are in place for the safety of children. King and the other councilors agreed to find a solution to the problem.
