Rams eighth, Lady Rams ninth at Carlsbad

CARLSBAD — Portales High's boys finished while and the girls were ninth in Friday's nine-school Ralph Bowyer Relays track meet, the season opener for the Rams and Lady Rams.

Hobbs swept both team titles, winning on the boys' side with 124 points to 94 1/2 for Lovington and in girls competition with 102 points to 70 for Las Vegas Robertson. PHS finished with 13 points in the boys meet, one behind seventh-place Robertson, and 22 for the girls, who were two points behind Lovington and seven back of Roswell High.

The Lady Rams' top finish was a third by junior Magdalina Gaeta in the 100 hurdles in 17.01 seconds. Freshman Hannah Cabledue was fourth in pole vault at 6-6 and fifth in shot put at 28-10, freshman Sheraya Cox was fifth in the 100 in 13:19 and junior Kate Thomas placed sixth in the 3,200 in 13 minutes, 17.08 seconds.

PHS scored in all three relays, finishing fourth in the 400 relay in 52.27 with Vanessa Ortiz, Andrea Tapia, Brenda Calderon and Cox and in the 1,600 medley relay in 5:03.35 with Tapia, Karimah Hulett, Damari Jimenez and Jimena LaVelle. The Lady Rams were fifth in the 800 relay in 1:57.41 with Emilee Haman, Hulett, Calderon and Tapia.

Sophomore MIchael Nichols led the boys, finishing third in the 300 hurdles in 43.14 and fourth in the 110 hurdles in 16.40. Also for the Rams, sophomore Kobi Shillings earned a third-place finish in the 400 in 55.13, while junior Matthew Shelley was sixth in both the 110 (16.87) and 300 hurdles (44.46).

PHS squads host the Jim Love Invite on April 5 in their next outing.
