Wayland Baptist rallies past Zias

Angeleigh Davis scored 19 points to lead three Flying Queens in double figures, and Wayland Baptist took control in the final five minutes of the first half and cruised to a 66-48 victory Saturday afternoon at Greyhound Arena.

Rochelle Norris added 13 and Laura Castillo 11 for visiting Wayland Baptist (6-3), which used a 14-3 run over the final 4:50 of the half to wrestle away control of a game that had featured 11 lead changes.

The Flying Queens never trailed in the second half, and held the winless Zias (0-4) to 39 percent shooting on the night.

Freshman Jaylyn Cooper was the lone double-figure scorer for the Zias with a career-high 13 points on 5-of-13 shooting.

Cooper and Portales native Tara Johnson each hit 3-pointers to spark a 12-3 run in the second half to cut the deficit to seven, but the Queens closed out the final 5:42 by hitting their final 12 from the line.

Clovis native Ashlee Pierson added nine points on 4-of-8 shooting.

The Zias will be back in action 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, when they host Angelo State to open Lone Star Conference play.
