Zias fall to bottom of LSC with 5-0 loss

SAN ANGELO, Texas — It didn't take Angelo State long to take Eastern New Mexico University out of Friday's Lone Star Conference women's soccer match, and now the Zias are in danger of not making the league's post-season tournament.

Freshman forward Lauren Bateman scored twice for the Rambelles (9-6-1, 7-4-1 LSC), the latter starting a three-goal barrage in a span of less than three minutes midway through the first half in a 5-0 rout of the Zias.

ENMU (5-11-0, 4-8-0) fell into a last-place tie in the eight-team league with Texas A&M-Commerce, a 2-1 loser at Abilene Christian. The Wildcats (6-9-1, 4-7-1) jumped ahead of the Zias and Lions (5-10-0, 4-8-0) and now hold the sixth and final berth in the tourney with two games left for all.

Volleyball — At Greyhound Arena, Texas A&M-Commerce's Rachel Robertson had 18 kills and five block assists as the Lions posted a 21-25, 25-16, 25-19, 25-23 LSC victory over the Zias.

Junior outside hitter Lindsey Barron posted a double-double for the Zias (6-15, 1-10 LSC) with 15 kills and 14 digs. Junior libero Hayley Couch finished with 25 digs, while junior middle blocker Kaitlyn Maddams added 10 kills.

The Zias broke away from a 20-20 tie in the first game with five of the final six points, getting two kills from Maddams and one from Clovis freshman Paige Gardner, but the Lions (16-6, 6-5) jumped on ENMU for the first six points of Game 2 and never looked back.

After the Zias scored the first three points of the third set, the Lions pulled to 4-3 and neither team led by more than two points again until Commerce went on a 10-1 run to open a 20-13 lead, getting two kills each from Breanne Snyder, Robertson and Ezon Onditi and an ace from Snyder to take control.

ENMU led much of the way in the fourth set, but neither team was ahead by more than two points. Courtney Bolton's ace put the Zias in front 22-21 and Maddams' kill tied it at 23-23, but the Lions closed it out on two Zias attack errors.

ENMU hosts Texas Woman's at noon today.
