Local students receive scholarship

A pair of eastern New Mexico students are among 38 high school seniors in the state receiving Daniels Fund money to attend the higher education institution of their choice.

According to a release from the Daniels Fund, Kristin Lopez of Floyd High and Cheyenne Rivera of Clovis High are among the selections.

"These are promising and motivated students who have demonstrated strong character, leadership, and a commitment to community service," Linda Childears, CEO of the Daniels Fund said in a release. "They are outstanding young people and the Daniels Fund is proud to partner with them as they fulfill their dreams of attending college."

According to the release:

  • Students are nominated through youth-serving agencies and college prep providers, and take part in a local interview and selection process.
  • The Daniels Scholarship is not "full ride," but is supplemental to all other financial aid resources available to the student. After those have been applied, the Daniels Scholarship covers tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies and a variety of miscellaneous expenses.
  • Students also receive a laptop computer and a printer.
  • The fund was created by Bill Daniels, a Hobbs native who attended New Mexico Military Institute. His estate transferred to the fund upon his death in 2000, and the program provides grants and scholarships for Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.
