CLOVIS — Teya Morris is scoring her points. She's just having to get them from the free throw line. On Thursday night, the Clovis High junior got enough support from her teammates that the Lady Wildcats were able to break out of a five-game losing streak. Morris scored 23 points, including 13-of-15 from the free throw line, and CHS posted a 48-38 victory over Amarillo Caprock in the consolation semifinals of the Plateau Holiday Classic at Rock Staubus Gym. • ROOSEVELT CO. YEAR IN SPORTS: Elida keeps adding to state titles

    David Norton|Updated Dec 30, 2016

One Roosevelt County team made its way back to the top, while another just refused to leave it. The Portales Rams are football champions once again, and Elida is the volleyball and girls basketball champion, seemingly as always, with 2016 coming to a close. Whether it is basketball or volleyball, Elida High seems to have it figured out. In 2016 both the Elida Lady Tigers basketball and volleyball teams won their respective class 1A titles and kept alive some of the longest streaks in the state. Rams football: Redemption,...

  • Year in review: ENMU president resigned

    Eamon Scarbrough|Updated Dec 30, 2016

Editor's note: This is one in a series of stories recapping news events in 2016. The search for a new Eastern New Mexico University president in 2017 began early in the college's fall semester. Current President Steven Gamble tendered his resignation to the university in May. After executive search firm Witt/Kiefer was chosen by the university's board of regents in September, the process of finding candidates for the position of president began in earnest. In early November,...

The Staff of the News|Updated Dec 30, 2016

On this date ... 1971: Clovis was recognized as one of the few communities where "firm plans" had been made to observe New Mexico's 60th year of statehood. City commissioners had signed a proclamation for a year-long observance. A celebration had been scheduled Jan. 8 at the Yucca Junior High gymnasium. Entertainment was planned, but "there will be no political speeches," said Don McAlavy, chairman of the Clovis Cultural Affairs Committee. 1956: Clovis TV Service had declared...

  • Christmas means sugar plums always win

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Dec 30, 2016

Henri Nouwen tells us Christmas is saying yes to something beyond all emotions and feelings. “Christmas is saying ‘yes’ to a hope based on God’s initiative, which has nothing to do with what I think or feel. Christmas is believing that the salvation of the world is God’s work and not mine,” the Dutch theologian wrote. Christmas is choosing for a change to take a look through the right end of the telescope and thrilling to the sight of God’s work written large rather than cring...

  • Character, faith worth passing on

    Judy Brandon|Updated Dec 30, 2016

Billy Graham, the famous Christian evangelist, once said: “The greatest legacy one can pass on to one’s children and grandchildren is not money or other material things accumulated in one’s life, but rather a legacy of character and faith.” I would say that my encounter with some special friends is the best example of Billy Graham’s words. It was about a week before Christmas, and I had the opportunity to visit with a group of friends, all seniors, ranging in age from 75 t...

  • Christmas tree, oh why so challenging

    Audra Brown|Updated Dec 30, 2016

Oh, Christmas tree, oh, Christmas tree, somewhat flat on one side are you. I’m a firm proponent of the idea that nothing is impossible. But, while anything can be accomplished, that does not always translate into the job getting done in an optimal manner. Sometimes, the best you can do is not quite as good as you’d hoped for. And so it was with the Christmas tree hunt one year. Me and the kid and the one in the middle had been dispatched to the ranch two counties over to fee...

  • Kids find new high

    Douglas Clark|Updated Dec 30, 2016

Poison centers are placing parents on alert with regard to the potential for teens using gardening seeds to get high. Officials said seeds for plants like Hawaiian Baby Woodrose, Sleepy Grass and Blue Morning Glory contain the hallucinogenic substance LSA, which is considered to be similar to LSD. “Ingested seeds can cause auditory and visual hallucinations, spatial or temporal distortion and introspection,” said Jeanie Jaramillo of the Texas Panhandle Poison Center, adding the seeds contain LSA in varied amounts — depen...
