    Dave Wagner|Updated Dec 21, 2016

CLOVIS — If the Farwell Lady Blue was nervous facing a Class 6A opponent, it certainly didn't show. In fact, they wasted no time taking control on Tuesday night at Rock Staubus Gym, scoring the game's first nine points and cruising to a 63-48 victory over Clovis High. Senior guard Lindsi Coburn led four players in double figures for the Class 2A Lady Blue (11-3), sinking 9-of-10 free throws and finishing with 18 points. Senior guard Edie White hit two long-range 3s in the o...

CLOVIS — Heading into Tuesday’s matchup between Portales and Clovis, both boys basketball coaches knew a key factor was going to be who won the inside game for control of the paint. Jeremy Karngbaye answered that question resoundingly, scoring a season-high 34 points to lead the Rams to a 71-58 win over the Wildcats. Portales (6-0) pulled away by outscoring the host Wildcats 34-23 in the second half. Jakeem Wynn and Taitte Kutcha of Clovis kept the game close until the start o...

Whether in the courtroom or in his personal life, former attorney Kent Peterson was remembered as a consummate professional and a man of integrity by some of his closest associates. The 60-year-old Peterson, who passed away Friday in Lubbock, worked for 18 years as a prosecutor with the New Mexico District Attorney’s Office, spending several of those years in Portales. • Government meddling catching up

    Kent McManigal|Updated Dec 21, 2016

Did the Russian government affect the recent U.S. presidential election? Maybe, but remind me again why I should care. You already know every election is rigged, because “abolish the office” isn’t among the options you are allowed to choose from. Until every election has this outcome as a very real possibility, the status quo is in no serious danger. It wasn’t “our election” unless you’ve sold yourself into bondage to this strange cult called “government.” Treasure your rightf...

  • Thankful Goliath didn't take people

    Rube Render|Updated Dec 21, 2016

It was on Christmas Eve, just one year ago That the High Plains were bracing, for wind and for snow. When the temperature dropped and the snow started falling, We huddled at home, and Goliath came calling. He swooped in with a vengeance and grounded the planes, He stopped all the autos and halted the trains. He closed Interstate 40 for four hundred miles, And the wind blew the snow into humongous piles. Forty miles per hour, sustained, blew the wind, With gusts up to eighty, a...

    Albuquerque Journal|Updated Dec 21, 2016

New Mexico’s past, present and future are intertwined with our nation’s military and military veterans. There has been honor — more Medals of Honor awarded per capita than any other state. There has been sacrifice — the highest per-capita casualty rates in World War II and a heavy toll in the Bataan Death March, and 649 servicemen and women lost in conflicts from Korea to Afghanistan. There has been investment — four military bases, three national laboratories and an estimated 172,500 veterans. And there has been a terrible d...
