  • Rams fall to Hereford in season opener

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 6, 2022

PORTALES - The big lineup, with 6-foot-7 seniors Jadyn Fletcher and Dayton DeLozier, wasn't working as well as Hereford boys coach Marquez Loftis had hoped on Saturday, so he went to a smaller unit and applied aggressive defensive pressure. That move seemed to work as the Whitefaces pulled away down the stretch to beat Portales High 53-42 in the Rams' season opener at the RAC. The teams took turns exchanging runs into the fourth quarter, but Hereford (4-2) stretched a...

  • Faith: Most precious gifts cost nothing but your love

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated Dec 6, 2022

In 1850, which was before she wrote her classic “Uncle Tom’s Cabin,” Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote a story for Christmas. One of her characters describes the difficulty of buying gifts, Christmas presents: “Oh, dear! Christmas is coming in a fortnight, and I have got to think up presents for everybody! Dear me, it’s so tedious! Everybody has got everything that can be thought of.” She then recalls the early years of her life when “presents did not fly about as they do now....

  • Faith: Change can come from grown-up Christmas list

    Patti Dobson, Religion columnist|Updated Dec 6, 2022

Christmas was simpler when I was a little kid. Maybe it was just that my wishes were simpler back then. I didn’t wish for world peace so much as I just believed it already existed. And I didn’t wish that people would get along, because in my rosy little world, they did. Cue a 1970s “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing” moment here. I also believed in the magic of Christmas. Still do. I believe that rather than name-calling and fighting, we need to remember that we belong to...

  • Happy we've lost the challenge of a long-distance call

    Betty Williamson, Local columnist|Updated Dec 6, 2022

As we plunge into the hustle and bustle of holiday events and the annual procuring of gifts, I’m happy to remind you of one issue you don’t need to fret about: The challenge of successfully completing a long-distance call on Christmas Day. Drop back a few decades (OK, maybe several decades) and it was a different story. In December of 1965, in fact, Mountain States Telephone Company took the precaution of asking the Portales News-Tribune to share the concern with its readers,...

  • Opinion: Politics doesn't define state, people

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Updated Dec 6, 2022

Every time I go back to my home country, I pine for the good old days of my youth. I was born in Ozark, Ark., where the Arkansas River Valley meets the Ozark Mountains, and graduated high school upstream in Fort Smith. In between, I also grew up in other small Arkansas cities and towns, as the son of an itinerant minister. In the mid-1970s, I left Arkansas, and started bouncing around, mostly between Tennessee, Kentucky and Arkansas. By the 1980s, I “settled down” in my native state, back to be close to family, and started a...

  • Opinion: FTX repeating many of Enron's fatal mistakes

    St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Syndicated content|Updated Dec 6, 2022

Back in 2001, precious few Americans could have explained what Houston-based Enron did as a company and how it got so spectacularly wealthy. When it filed for a record-breaking bankruptcy, Americans got schooled fast about not putting their trust and money behind swaggering, fast-talking con artists. But fools and their money regrouped over the years, and along came FTX, a $32 billion cryptocurrency exchange that repeated many of Enron’s mistakes and yielded the same abysmal results. We suspect that a lot of investors who l...

  • Opinion: No one has right to violate rights

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Updated Dec 6, 2022

Governments don’t respect rights. Your rights don’t change when you cross a line; not a state line or a national border. Rights are the same everywhere. Only the ways in which your rights are violated differ by location. Rights don’t change over time or due to majority opinion, either. If something is a violation of your rights today, it was a violation no matter how far back in history you go and it would remain a violation into the distant future. No matter what else chang...

  • Lawmakers: State 'swimming in money'

Grant McGee, The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 6, 2022

New Mexico is "swimming in money," so it's a good year to ask for funding from the state. That was the word from area lawmakers who spoke at Tuesday's Clovis-Curry County Chamber of Commerce Legislative Breakfast. "This is a good time to go on with projects," Rep. Martin Zamora, R-Santa Rosa, told the crowd. He said the state will have about $2 billion more to work with than a year ago when the Legislature convenes for a 60-day session on Jan. 17. "This year the state is...
