  • Faith: Baking therapy connects past to present

    Patti Dobson, Religion columnist|Updated Dec 5, 2023

When the world weighs on me, I pull out a tattered cookbook and thumb through the pages. Baking therapy. The old book has recipes from decades and people long past. There’s something soothing about those pages, and revisiting family stories. I don’t know that it’s a family history so much as a hodgepodge of memories. Past celebrations. Past holidays. Past conversations. I replay conversations with my dad over and over again. When things are especially trying, I picture him in...

  • Faith: Darkness doesn't hide us from Creator's gaze

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated Dec 5, 2023

Long-suffering readers of this column know that I care about and try to focus on the traditional foundational truths of Christianity, but one of my deep beliefs is that truth is truth wherever it is found, and all of it is God’s. When someone begins to talk about “my truth,” as if truth could be changed for any individual like choosing a differently colored shirt, I want to dissent. Gravity is a law that follows laws, and in this world, we all must deal with its truth — and al...

the Staff of The News|Updated Dec 5, 2023

HOBBS – With many of their top performers not on hand, Clovis High's swim teams probably did well to earn fifth-place team finishes in Saturday's Reid Eagle Invite. Coming off a season-opening, 15-point loss at Hereford on Friday night, the Wildcats rebounded with a strong third quarter to eventually subdue Rio Rancho 68-47 on Saturday at Rock Staubus Gym. On this date … 1940: A 16-year-old boy was in Clovis’ jail waiting for railroad officials to question him about an incident that occurred in Dalhart, Texas. The boy told police he wanted to turn himself in to authorities because he was wanted for escaping parole in Kansas. That was not the case, but police inquiries led to the Dalhart connection. “I don’t know whether it was his conscience bothering him as much as his stomach,” Clovis Police Chief R.M. Witherspoon said. “He wa...

The automatic recount of the Grady mayor’s race and City Council positions resulted in no changes, Curry County Clerk Annie Hogland said. The county’s Recount Election Board convened Monday to review the Nov. 7 election results. The Grady races were each decided by fewer than five votes, which requires an automatic recount, according to state statute. None of the numbers changed, Hogland said. • Opinion: Neither candidate will benefit from debate

    Michael Reagan, Syndicated content|Updated Dec 5, 2023

Excuse me for skipping the great debate Thursday night between the governors of Florida and California. I had better things to do than watch a meaningless political debate between Red State hero Ron DeSantis and Blue State hero Gavin Newsom. Anyway, I’ve already suffered enough political pain in the last few months. I’ve watched what seemed like a dozen presidential primary debates – Republican Party exhibition games, really – starring a bunch of second- and third-s...

  • Opinion: Far right must be stopped for democracy

    Elwood Watson, Syndicated content|Updated Dec 5, 2023

Donald Trump is telling us he’s a threat to democracy. We just have to listen. Earlier this month on his Truth Social website, Trump threatened to “expel” and “cast out” government workers who oppose his radical views, describing them as a “sick political class” that hates the country. The 2024 election, he wrote, “is our final battle.” Sound apocalyptic to you? The former president’s use of the words “cast out” elicited a chorus of praise from his most loyal constituency: whi...

  • Opinion: Community News Act would help newspapers through tax incentives

Silver Cit Daily Press, Syndicated content|Updated Dec 5, 2023

While public confidence in journalism remains low, surveys in recent years by the Pew Research Center and Gallup, among others, suggest that local news is faring better in public opinion. Surveys show high rates of confidence in local reporting and community information, as well as for advertising sources. Interestingly, the confidence spans age groups: It’s not just the older generations that value their local newspapers, even as more and more people look for that information online. A 2019 survey by Pew also found that m...

  • Once or twice, me and my chonies have gotten theatrical

Grant McGee, The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 5, 2023

Chonies. It’s one of my favorite words I learned here in The Great American Southwest. It’s a colloquialism for underwear. I mean, call underwear what everyone else everywhere else does and it’s pretty plain: Underwear, tighty whities, stuff like that. Chonies? That gives underwear character, that gives underwear soul. One may give chonies even more character, even more soul by using them theatrically. I need to explain this. A couple of times in my life I have walked out of my domicile wearing just my chonies, to get atten...
