the Staff of The News|Updated Nov 28, 2023

Forty years ago, the Food Bank of Eastern New Mexico was but a pantry in Nancy Taylor's shoe store off of Seventh Street in Clovis. Earlier this month, the organization that has provided food to more than 2.4 million people across five counties achieved a new level of cool – a 1,056 square-feet freezer, which allows it to hold a larger variety of food and maintain its shelf life. "It's one of the biggest things in our history," said Dianna Sprague, executive director of the f...

The Santa Fe New Mexican, Syndicated content|Updated Nov 28, 2023

The state Supreme Court affirmed a District Court judge’s decision that said while Democratic lawmakers tried to dilute Republican voting power in one of the state’s three congressional districts, their efforts did not equate to gerrymandering. Pending a potential rehearing, Monday’s ruling means the redistricted boundaries will remain in place. The state’s highest court issued a four-page decision on the case Monday morning, a week after it heard oral arguments on whether Senate Bill 1, approved in a special session in late...

  • Faith: All fearfully, wonderfully made in God's majesty

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated Nov 28, 2023

The venerable St. Francis of Assisi tell us: “The world is a great stage, on which God displays his many wonders.” So true. And I’m struck yet again that some of God’s most beautiful wonders are on full display as the seasons change and God gives us a new view of the world we walk through each day. We have it on good authority that no two snowflakes are exactly alike. But the truth both of science and our own eyes, if we really open them, is that we have never stepped out our...

  • Commentary: A hollow march to a bowl berth

Jon Mark Beilue, Sports columnist|Updated Nov 28, 2023

Considering just a few years ago Texas Tech was in the middle of one bowl berth over five seasons, that these Red Raiders are going to their third bowl in a row could be viewed as a significant achievement. Could be. TCU went from the national championship game to not being bowl eligible in one year. Nebraska, once one of the traditional powers in college football, a program that owned an NCAA-record 35 straight bowl appearances, missed a bowl for the unfathomable seventh...

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Nov 28, 2023

Lovington used the run to keep Portales High's defense honest in Saturday's Class 4A state football championship game at Greyhound Stadium. Meantime, the Rams had no answers for the Wildcats' potent passing attack, led by senior quarterback Wyatt Gomez. Riding six touchdown passes from Gomez, including five in the first half, Lovington was simply overwhelming. The Wildcats scored on eight of nine possessions in the game en route to a 57-21 victory. If it weren't for...

  • Opinion: Confederate flag always symbol of hate

    Elwood Watson, Syndicated content|Updated Nov 28, 2023

Recently, I was heading home from a local coffeehouse. Along the way, at one specific intersection, there were a few men in a pickup truck with a Confederate flag. Two men were sitting in the back of the truck, and one of them proceeded to yell at me, “Do you see this flag?!” I rolled down my window and delivered a blunt commentary to the guy, letting my emotions get the best of me. He responded with “White power” at the same moment the truck took off and headed down the hig...

  • Opinion: Wind energy can co-exist with wildlife

    Bloomberg News, Syndicated content|Updated Nov 28, 2023

Wind power may be having a difficult year, but it’s still many times cheaper than oil or gas and remains a core piece of the energy-transition puzzle. A single rotation of a 260-meter-tall offshore turbine — General Electric Co.’s Haliade-X 13 MW, to be precise — can produce enough energy to power a household for more than two days, emitting no carbon or other pollutants. Not everyone is a fan. NIMBYism is one of the biggest barriers to green energy installations, as local residents protest “view-ruining” turbines an...

She is here! Today marks week 2 ... of being a mom. I am happy to report that our baby girl, Autumn Liberty, was born at 11:33 p.m. on Nov. 15. She only had 27 minutes to spare, or she and I would have shared a birthday. It was by far the best birthday I have ever had as it was my first day as a mom. The experience was something I will never forget. Having her was the hardest thing I've ever done, but it was also the most rewarding thing I've ever done at the same time. She...
