  • Fires in Curry, Roosevelt start weekend

    Eamon Scarbrough, Staff writer|Updated Nov 24, 2017

The holiday weekend began with a reminder of fire danger in the region. A mobile home on the 1400 block of Roosevelt Road 4 in Roosevelt County caught fire around noon Thursday after a controlled burn “got out of hand and got under the mobile home,” said Portales Fire Department Battalion Chief T.J. Cathey. The structure was a total loss, but no injuries were reported, he said. Cathey said he did not know if anyone lived in the mobile home. Friday saw three fires in Curry County, namely around mile marker 11 off of Hig...

Cory McKendree added 16 points, James Taylor 15 and Sean Phillips 14 for the Hilltoppers (5-1), who shot 56 percent from the field and 14-of-24 from beyond the arc in a game they led for the final 38:29. • Clovis boys basketball team ready to run

    Peter Stein, Staff Writer|Updated Nov 24, 2017

CLOVIS - Anyone planning to attend Clovis boys basketball games this winter might get a crick in their neck from swiveling it back and forth so much. The Wildcats don't plan to be a plodding, methodical, half-court team. They want to push the ball up the floor. Run, run and run some more. "Up-tempo," Clovis head coach Scott Robinson said. "We are built to be an up-tempo team, both offensively and defensively." Robinson says he has the players for that style, and it's a...

  • H.S. football: Texas teams done

    Peter Stein, Staff Writer|Updated Nov 24, 2017

It was truly Black Friday for three local Texas football teams. All three headed into Friday afternoon still afloat in the Texas playoffs. When the day was over, though, each had been eliminated, two in heartbreaking fashion. Merkel came back to edge Muleshoe by a point. Clarendon rallied from two scores down to top Bovina by six. Farwell entered its game against Wellington with a roster that more resembled a M*A*S*H unit than a football team, and was shut out. Wellington 34, Farwell 0 PLAINVIEW, Texas — The Steers were b...

On this date ... 1982: It was a white Thanksgiving for most of eastern New Mexico as snow that started the day before was building up across the region. New Mexico State Police said holiday travelers would be facing some roads that were snow-packed and icy in the first winter storm of the season. Mike Wilson, a senior at Clovis High School, wrote “I love you” in the freshly fallen snowflakes on his girlfriend’s car, a message that disappeared under more snow within the half hour. 1962: Several members of the Portales Business...

Anne DInnocenzio- Joseph Pisani, The Associated Press|Updated Nov 24, 2017

NEW YORK - Shoppers were out before dawn in the U.S. for fun and for deals, as retailers that have had a tough year were hoping to bring customers to their stores and websites for Black Friday, one of the biggest shopping days of the year. Black Friday has morphed from a single day when people got up early to score doorbusters into a whole season of deals, so shoppers may feel less need to be out. Some love the excitement, even if they've already done some of their shopping...
