  • With infrastructure bill signed, authority eyes next steps

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated Nov 20, 2021

TEXICO — An infrastructure bill that should cover the full federal share of the Eastern New Mexico Rural Water System over the next five years was signed into law Monday by President Joe Biden. That’s the good news for the Eastern New Mexico Water Utility Authority, which is working on building the system to supply groundwater from the Ute Reservoir in Quay County to member communities in Curry and Roosevelt counties. The not-so-bad news the authority discussed at its Thursday meeting in Texico is how it needs to stand out...

  • Lady Cats seek scoring punch

    Dave Wagner, Staff writer|Updated Nov 20, 2021

CLOVIS - They graduated all five starters from a scoring-challenged team, so it's pretty obvious what the Clovis High girls basketball team is looking for this season. The Lady Wildcats, who went 5-6 in last spring's COVID-abbreviated campaign, are trying to find any scoring they can as they prepare for Tuesday's season opener at Rio Rancho Cleveland. Still, CHS alum Jeff Reed is relatively optimistic as he begins his 14th year at the helm, and he's ready for the season to...

  • CHS players sign letters for softball

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated Nov 20, 2021

CLOVIS — Esperanza Tafoya and Marina Sena still have another season to do some damage for the Clovis High softball team. But they already know where their gloves and bats will take them next year. The two signed letters of intent Friday evening at a ceremony held by friends and family at Traci’s Greenhouse — Tafoya to Lamar Community College in Colorado and Sena to University of the Southwest in Hobbs. The two signed their letters in front of family members with cameras in hand, at a table decorated with their uniforms from...

The decision to invite CWU, SFU and WOU was reached this fall with the teams beginning LSC play in 2022. “We are excited to welcome the Central Washington, Simon Fraser and Western Oregon football programs to the Lone Star Conference,” LSC commissioner Jay Poerner said in a conference releast. “As affiliate members, these th...

  • Hounds outlast NNMC

    Dave Wagner, Staff writer|Updated Nov 20, 2021

PORTALES - Brent Owen's first win as the Eastern New Mexico University men's basketball coach was certainly an up-and-down ride. First, the Greyhounds looked like they would blow out NAIA member Northern New Mexico. Then the Eagles stormed back and took a couple of late leads. In the end, ENMU made enough plays to secure an 87-80 victory in Friday night's home opener at Greyhound Arena. It wasn't pretty, but it was a notch in the win column. "It's way more fun to learn from a...

The Wildcats and Lady Wildcats staged an exhibition on Friday at Rock Staubus Gym, and the team traveled to Goddard H.S. in Roswell on Saturday for what was essentially a preseason competition. Not surprisingly, both CHS squads lack experience in the sport. ...

  • Muleshoe ousted from playoffs by Jim Ned

the Staff of The News|Updated Nov 20, 2021

LUBBOCK — Early in the second half, Muleshoe’s hopes of advancing in the Texas Class 3A Division I football playoffs were alive and kicking in Friday’s area-round matchup against defending state champion Jim Ned. Then the Indians took over the game — or more to the point, Xavier Wishert did. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound senior running back/linebacker carried 28 times for 268 yards and scored five touchdowns, including a 99-yard run and another on a pass reception, as Jim Ned (12-0) pulled away to a 49-20 victory. “We played th...

  • Opinion: Gun ban must be extended to local boards

    Walt Rubel, Syndicated content|Updated Nov 20, 2021

The New Mexico Legislature has finally passed a rule banning guns in the state Capitol building. Now, it needs to provide that same common-sense protection for local school boards and city councils. The Legislative Council Committee, which includes leaders from both parties and chambers and meets each month when the Legislature is not in session, passed the new rule on an 8-5 vote, with all Republicans in opposition. Past attempts to ban firearms at the Roundhouse through legislation have failed, following contentious...

  • Opinion: Anti-vaxxers cosplaying victimhood

    Leonard Pitts, Syndicated content|Updated Nov 20, 2021

The Nazis are coming. That, to a distressing extent, is the crux of the argument being mounted by some of those who refuse to obey vaccine mandates. Last Sunday, a group of them even showed up at the Bronx office of New York State Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz with yellow Stars of David affixed to their clothes. For those who don’t know: Beginning in 1939, the Nazis required Jews to wear such stars with the word “Jew” written inside on their clothing for easy ident...

  • Letters to the editor - Nov. 21

    Updated Nov 20, 2021

Biden hasn’t been ‘getting things done’ Regarding Tom McDonald’s editorial Wednesday that praised Joe Biden for “getting things done:” Only a person ignorant of America’s founding principles and destiny would applaud Biden’s Afghanistan pull out. This nation has been a bulwark of freedom and justice that has offered refuge to many millions of oppressed peoples throughout the world. In our 20 years in Afghanistan we introduced a society with equal education and much improved treatment for women. By 2021 there were more than...

  • Opinion: Biden making a lackluster president

    Rich Lowry, Syndicated content|Updated Nov 20, 2021

Joe Biden was never exactly a colossus bestriding the Earth, but he’s been getting smaller by the day. A recent Washington Post poll suggested his presidency is, for now, a smoking political crater. It had him at a 41% approval rating, despite the passage of his long-sought infrastructure bill that was supposed to buoy him and his party. Even more striking, the survey found that Republicans lead Democrats on the generic congressional ballot by 10 points, 51% to 41%, an u...

  • Opinion: Vaccination order robs people of needs

    Rube Render, Local columnist|Updated Nov 20, 2021

According to Wikipedia, “Abraham Harold Maslow was an American psychologist who was best known for creating Maslow's hierarchy of needs, a theory of psychological health predicated on fulfilling innate human needs in priority, culminating in self-actualization.” Maslow's pyramid contains five levels and each level must be met or realized prior to advancing to the next level, in order to reach level five, “self-actualization.” The levels, from the bottom up, are: Physiological,...

  • Opinion: Redrawn maps have lost their political neutrality

    Albuquerque Journal, Syndicated content|Updated Nov 20, 2021

The last time state lawmakers were tasked with drawing new maps for the state House and Senate, it took more than a year of fiercely partisan wrangling, four trials and $5.6 million of litigation costs billed to taxpayers. The final House map crafted by a state District Court judge in 2012 and approved by the New Mexico Supreme Court pitted two incumbent Democrats against each other and two incumbent Republicans against each other for seats in the N.M. House of Representatives. The map, drawn by retired District Judge James...

  • Portales council chooses redistricting plan

    Steve Hansen, Staff writer|Updated Nov 20, 2021

PORTALES — The Portales City Council chose a redistricting plan for the city Tuesday that leaves cleaner boundary lines for each district and adds a few blocks to the city’s Ward A from each of three surrounding districts to achieve population equity. The city made its choice from three options that were presented in a public hearing that preceded the council’s regular meeting on Tuesday. After Brad Morrison of consulting firm Research and Polling, Inc., presented the options his firm developed for the city’s redistr...

  • Clovis commissioners adopt redistricting plan for next year

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated Nov 20, 2021

CLOVIS — After an admission that no choice would please everybody, and a discussion that illustrated just that, Clovis city commissioners on Thursday adopted a redistricting plan to take effect next year. The commission by a 6-2 vote picked Plan A, one of six options created by Research and Polling to satisfy the city’s requirement to create four commission districts that were roughly equal in population determined by the 2020 Census. Essentially, the plans found different ways to move population from Districts 1 and 4 to...

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated Nov 20, 2021

PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico University’s regents got a touch of good news, along with a dose of uncertainty, on various building projects during their Friday meeting. Vice President for Business Affairs Scott Smart told regents design is complete on Roosevelt Hall renovations, and he’s hoping to get construction documents in late February to set up March bidding and May construction. He did say construction price increases could wreak havoc on the budget, and that he plans to see what additional help the state could provi...

The theater was donated in 2003 to Clovis Community College by Lyle Walker, Kenneth Broad, Julian Bivins and the estate of Vi Petty, who with her husband Norman, operated the famous Norman Petty studio in...

  • Regents consider 5% rate increase

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated Nov 20, 2021

PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico University, like any college, has had its challenges over the last two years. In a discussion-only matter, the college’s regents on Friday first looked at a likely hike in tuition and fees for the 2022-23 school year. Regents were floated a 5% increase, which would be an increase of about $162 per semester for a full-time student, with a request to act in the Dec. 10 meeting so the college would have solid numbers to tell potential students and their families. The board plans to discuss the mat...
