  • Lady Buffs cap off perfect regular season

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Nov 8, 2022

MELROSE — Nobody quite foresaw what was coming. After all, unbeaten Melrose is the two-time defending Class 1A state volleyball champion and the top-ranked team in 1A, and the Lady Buffs have reached the state finals for eight consecutive years under coach Casey Jackson, winning four titles in that time. Still, their 25-16, 25-2, 25-11 District 6-1A dismantling of rival Logan on Saturday — in less than an hour, no less — was a surprise even to the Lady Buffs. “It was probably the cleanest (match) we’ve played all year,” Ja...

Eighth-graders Brooke Newcomer (59th in 22 minutes, 37.47 seconds) and Mai Nguy (61st, 22:38.38) led the way for Clovis. “The team ran good,...

  • ENMU women look to play at faster pace

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Nov 8, 2022

PORTALES — Second-year Eastern New Mexico University women’s basketball coach Meghan De los Reyes, who led the Greyhounds to a 10-14 record (6-10 Lone Star Conference) in her initial campaign, decided to change gears with her team this season. She has nine new players, a new assistant coach (Martin Pazanin) and a new style — as in up-tempo. Picked 10th out of 16 teams in the LSC this season — although the conference is actually splitting into two eight-team divisions — De los Reyes says she doesn’t play much attention t...

the Staff of The News|Updated Nov 8, 2022

PORTALES - If there ever was any question, the Lovington Wildcats showed Portales High they are more than capable when they stunned the Rams 20-14 on Oct. 28 at Greyhound Stadium in the battle for the District 4-6/4A championship. • Hounds hope newcomers will lead to success

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Nov 8, 2022

PORTALES — Brent Owen begins his second season as the Eastern New Mexico University men’s basketball coach trying to change the culture. Last season, the Greyhounds had a couple of good wins early and were 6-6 as Lone Star Conference play got rolling. They then suffered through an 11-game losing streak before capturing their finale over Western New Mexico, but the 7-17 record (3-11 LSC) didn’t sit well. Owen thinks with the players the Hounds have brought in, they can turn things around quickly. “We made a pretty signifi...

  • Faith: Don't forget to thank God for reminder of promise

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated Nov 8, 2022

Seasons are good, and I’m glad I live in a place where we get a distinct taste of each of them. “For everything there is a season,” writes the wise man in Ecclesiastes 3, “and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted . . .” and on he goes, pondering not really the seasons of the year so much as the “times” of our lives. Nonetheless, the deep truth he utters finds its root in the reality...

  • Opinion: Searching for reason for optimism

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Updated Nov 8, 2022

Sometimes I feel like an optimist in search of a reason to still feel that way. I want to believe in what’s good about this world, but writing about the issues of our time can be depressing. I’m penning this column in advance of this year’s general election results, so I don’t know who won and who lost. I’ve already written about my frustrations with this election cycle, including all the fears that have been espoused on both sides of the political divide, so even if I were to spin some optimism into the mix, you wouldn’t...

  • Good month for local theater productions in Portales

    Betty Williamson, Local columnist|Updated Nov 8, 2022

Settling into a theater seat as the houselights dim and a performance gets under way – that’s one of my favorite places to be. If you’re a theater junkie, too, I have good news: Two local productions are scheduled to take place this month in Portales. One is a revenge comedy that cleverly deals with a tough topic; the second is a lighthearted parody perfect for all ages. The revenge comedy — “Exit, Pursued by a Bear” by Lauren Gunderson — opens Thursday for a four-day run...

  • Opinion: Alaska voting system could change the structure of elections

Institute for Political Innovation, Syndicated content|Updated Nov 8, 2022

For a nation torn apart politically, a cure is emerging, of all places, in Alaska. On Tuesday, voters in the 49th state went to the polls to elect a U.S. senator and representative in a new way. The system, called “final four voting,” is aimed at choosing public officials — of any party — who will focus not on tearing down their opponents but on getting things done. Alaska’s system, approved by the electorate in 2020, directly targets America’s greatest political challenges: how to get government to produce real solutions a...

  • Opinion: Don't base your life on politicians

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Updated Nov 8, 2022

Why would anyone bother confronting politicians? Do they really believe politicians matter in their daily life? You protect your rights by exercising them -- by putting them into practice -- not by begging others to respect them. I’m not going to a politician’s office to try to convince them of anything. Not to beg them to stop violating my rights nor to ask them to violate someone else on my behalf. You won’t find me at a protest, a political rally, or in a voting booth for t...

So far three males from Amarillo, Tx. have attempted or successfully cashed checks at Clovis banks. The police, who continue to investigate the case, say some of the individuals have been positively ident...

the Staff of The News|Updated Nov 8, 2022

  • Vape sensors detect nearly 300 incidents at campuses

Kathleen Stinson, The Staff of The News|Updated Nov 8, 2022

CLOVIS – Officials last week activated sensors to detect vape use and said they recorded nearly 300 incidents at two secondary campuses of Clovis Municipal Schools. “While district awareness of the growing prevalence of vaping among youth nationwide and locally led to the purchase of the detection system, the sheer quantity of detection alerts is incomprehensible, particularly when the system is not yet operating at full capability,” school officials stated in a news release. The district is in the process of insta...

  • Locals weigh in on ENMU chancellor candidates

Grant McGee, The Staff of The News|Updated Nov 8, 2022

PORTALES – Five candidates from five different states interviewed for the chancellor/president job at Eastern New Mexico University last week. All five engaged in forums specifically for ENMU staff, faculty and people from the community and university, traveled to the ENMU Roswell and Ruidoso campuses and were interviewed by the university’s Board of Regents. A water main break in Portales caused some interviews to be conducted virtually, but Regent Phillip Bustos said he thought the interviews went well despite cha...

  • Hobbs approves anti-abortion stance

The Staff of The News|Updated Nov 8, 2022

The Hobbs City Commission on Monday voted unanimously to approve an ordinance aimed at banning abortions in the city. The measure is similar to an attempt to ban abortions in Clovis, which commissioners tabled last week. Neither Hobbs nor Clovis has an abortion clinic, but private healthcare providers have expressed interest in opening one because Texas has imposed a near-total ban on abortion. Response came quickly from New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham. “This resolution, authored by out-of-state extremists working t...
