  • Dora needs one half to advance to eight-man second round

    Eric Murray|Updated Nov 5, 2017

DORA — The No. 5 Dora Coyotes will advance to next week’s eight-man quarterfinals, following an opening round blowout victory at home on Friday night. The Coyotes needed just one half of football to beat the No. 12 Pine Hill Warriors, scoring nine touchdowns in a 64-0 rout. “I thought our kids played pretty clean, for the most part. We have a lot of cleaning up to do before next Friday, even though it didn’t show up on the scoreboard,” Coyotes coach Mason McBee said. “There were still missed assignments that we need to get... Full story

  • La Cueva shuts out Wildcats

The Staff of The News|Updated Nov 4, 2017

ALBUQUERQUE — How quickly momentum can change. Entering Friday, the Clovis Wildcats were an 11-point win away from taking second place in District 2-6A. Leaving Friday, they’re in fourth place and on the playoff bubble following a 27-0 defeat to La Cueva at F.M. Wilson Stadium. The loss probably doesn’t knock the Wildcats (5-5, 1-3) out of the playoffs for the first time since the 2001 season, but it certainly increases the chances they’ll play a first-round game away from the friendly confines of Leon Williams Stadium...

  • Rams crush Colts to end season 9-1

    Peter Stein|Updated Nov 4, 2017

PORTALES — The Portales football team's 51-0 win over New Mexico Military Institute on Friday, though hardly surprising, was a testament to how well the Rams are clicking as the regular season winds to a close. A shutout — even for a team that was posting one for the fifth time this season to tie a school record, and doing it this time against a rebuilding program — is something to make a defense proud, especially a unit that allowed no first downs in the first half. An offen...

  • Aguilar: ENMU, volleyball were right choices

    Eric Murray|Updated Nov 4, 2017

PORTALES — Former Clovis High grad Andrea Aguilar didn't always plan on staying close to home to resume her volleyball career, despite coming from a large family. However, after further consideration, she decided to stick around and attend Eastern New Mexico, and it's a decision that she's glad to have made. "I finally came in and got to practice one day (with the ENMU volleyball team during my senior year of high school)," Aguilar explained. "I really liked the girls and i...

  • Elida wins 4-1A volleyball tournament

    Eric Murray|Updated Nov 4, 2017

ELIDA — The Elida Tigers volleyball team extended their school record to eight straight on Friday afternoon. The Tigers took down the Melrose Buffaloes in four sets, 25-18, 27-25, 20-25 and 25-20, to take their third win over the Buffaloes in four matches. There may very well be a fifth in Rio Rancho, the site of next week's Class 1A championship. "Gosh dang, we're just tired of playing each other," Elida coach Darrell Chenault said, laughing. "They're just really good, and we...
