the Staff of The News|Updated Oct 12, 2021

SILVER CITY — It’s been a long time since Western New Mexico has tasted victory against Eastern New Mexico University in football. That nearly changed on Saturday night. In a wild finish reminiscent of some of Sunday’s NFL games, ENMU scored twice in the final minute to wrest a 50-47 Lone Star Conference victory over the Mustangs in a matchup which in recent years has been dubbed the “Green Chili Bowl.” The teams combined for more than 700 yards of offense and 11 touchdown passes. • Ahead of my time in the hairdressing field

    Betty Williamson, Local columnist|Updated Oct 12, 2021

I was 3 or 4 years old when I first became a hairdresser, an early career path that failed to earn wholehearted support from my parents. I’m not sure who was my first victim, the baby “Pebbles” doll, or … well, let me get to the other in a moment. If you’re old enough, you may remember Pebbles, the cavegirl toddler who was the daughter of cartoon Neanderthals, Fred and Wilma Flintstone, on the popular Saturday morning series, “The Flintstones.” The 16-inch Pebbles doll was rel...

  • Opinion: Progress should be for greater good

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 12, 2021

“Progress” is a word liberals grabbed to avoid the “liberal” label that those on the right have soiled so effectively. Feel free to call me either; better that than to embrace the stagnation of conservative thinking. The reality is, we all want progress. OK, there are exceptions - like the Proud Boys, who prefer supremacy to equality and anything over liberalism - but for the rest of us, we want our society moving forward. The divisions come when it’s time to talk about what that really means. By definition, “progress...

  • Opinion: Dems should be more prudent with spending

    Bloomberg News, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 12, 2021

As they prepare to spend $1.2 trillion on a bipartisan infrastructure deal, along with a vastly larger sum on a party-line social-policy bill, Democrats might be expected to defend their ambitions on the merits. Instead, progressive leaders seem to be focused on fiscal gimmickry. Their goal is to advance a $3.5 trillion initiative known as Build Back Better. With moderates balking at the bill’s scope and cost, efforts are underway to deliver a slimmer version that might command broader support. Unfortunately, these seem to b...

  • Opinion: Cannabis licensing smacks of scam

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Updated Oct 12, 2021

If government claims it will finally allow you — after you buy a license — to do something you’ve always had a natural human right to do, but makes the rules for getting the license so burdensome, complex, annoying, and expensive that few will jump through the hoops, what was really accomplished? Was your freedom increased or was it a scam? The New Mexico cannabis business licensing scheme looks like one such example to me. Some licensing schemes are concerned with controlling...
