  • Faith: Smart watches may be smarter than me

    Patti Dobson, Religion columnist|Updated Oct 4, 2022

I need to hire a kid. STAT! I had the bright idea to get smart watches for us after seeing a news story about a woman whose watch alerted her to a dangerous medical condition. The watch detected an unusual heart rhythm and periods of an alarmingly high pulse rate. She ended up in an ER, and then ICU where doctors were able to address an undiagnosed heart condition. The same story talked about the different types of “things” a smart watch would show, like stress levels, ste...

  • Faith: Fulfilling and faithful to live and die with the Lord

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated Oct 4, 2022

It was in winter, the Apostle John writes (John 10), “at the time of Hanukkah,” when Jesus was at Jerusalem and in the Temple. “Surrounded” by some really religious folks who demanded that he tell them “plainly” whether or not he was the Messiah, he did. Well, what he really said was, “I’ve already told you, and you didn’t believe me.” But he went on to say some amazing things that all lead to one answer: Yes. One thing you’ve gotta give Jesus’ detractors here is that...

  • Commentary: Tech's goal? Be as good as K-State

Jon Mark Beilue, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 4, 2022

When little kids grow up, most want to be a police officer or firefighter, maybe a cowboy. They never want to be an accountant. That’s much too dull. When the Texas Tech football program grows up, the Red Raiders should aspire to be accountants. If football programs were job titles, the Kansas State Wildcats are the accountants of the Big 12. The Wildcats have long been organized, efficient, and detailed. They are substance over style, grit over glitter. In short, they have be...

the Staff of The News|Updated Oct 4, 2022

GRADY — Dora sophomore Aaron Combs returned two kickoffs for touchdowns, including the opening kickoff, and the Coyotes got off to a fast start before holding off Grady 51-42 on Friday in a 6-man District 2 clash. Combs also had touchdown runs of 50 and 2 yards as Dora (5-1, 2-0 district) opened leads of 14-0 and 25-7 before the Bronchos (2-4, 0-3) staged a late comeback. Senior Lane Faver connected with senior Conner Rooney for a 35-yard TD pass for the Coyotes, and Rooney also scored on a 1-yard run. Junior Cole Kircher a...

  • Lady Cats notch 2-1 soccer win against Hobbs

the Staff of The News|Updated Oct 4, 2022

HOBBS — For the most part, wins over rival Hobbs have been tough to come by lately for the Clovis High girls soccer team. On Saturday, though, the Lady Wildcats picked up a big one by holding on for a 2-1 victory over the Lady Eagles and taking firm control of the District 4-5A race. Hobbs (5-8-3, 1-1-1 district) may be going through a bit of a down season, but second-year Clovis coach Ray Rodriguez noted his squad wasn’t exactly at full strength for the match due to recent injury and illness. “We had like five girls getti...

the Staff of The News|Updated Oct 4, 2022

PORTALES — After the opening set on Saturday, it looked like it was “here we go again” for Eastern New Mexico University’s volleyball team. The Greyhounds hit St. Edward’s with a 9-1 surge to start the match, then saw Game 1 slip away late. But they recovered to post a 23-25, 25-17, 28-26, 25-18 Lone Star Conference victory over the Austin-based Hilltoppers at Greyhound Arena, and end their six-match LSC losing streak. • Los Huracanes celebrating anniversary - and a star

    Betty Williamson, Local columnist|Updated Oct 4, 2022

In a week when a hurricane has been dominating the news, I've been spending time learning about some hurricanes in our own back yard. Eight of them, if you're counting. The ones I am talking about are members of the renowned Norteño band, Los Huracanes del Norte, which is headquartered in a striking Spanish colonial-style compound on US 70 seven miles northeast of Portales. Jose Guadalupe Garcia, who goes by Lupillo or Lupe, graciously spent an afternoon recently telling me mo...

  • Lady Rams post victory over Texico

the Staff of The News|Updated Oct 4, 2022

TEXICO — Second-year Portales High volleyball coach Jacki Bailey believes her relatively inexperienced squad is starting to find its footing. On Saturday, the Lady Rams turned the tables on an earlier five-set loss to Texico in PHS’ Peyton Chavez Invitational by storming back to top the Lady Wolverines 14-25, 25-12, 25-15, 25-22. The teams met again in Portales next Tuesday. “The last two (matches) we’ve played a lot cleaner,” Bailey said. “We lost big in the first game, but we weren’t rattled and we played solid the las...

  • Opinion: We should laugh about differences more

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 4, 2022

Maybe you’ve read my brother Don’s column, something I run weekly in my Guadalupe County News because, well, he loaned me money. That’s why we call his weekly column “The One Percenter,” because that’s about how much of my newspaper he “owns,” although we are now locked in a pitched battle over an additional 1%, which he thinks he has earned by bringing in “at least a million” readers, a figure he arrived at using a mathematical formula he made up. Who says numbers don’t lie? Fortunately, my brother doesn’t make his livi...

  • Opinion: Register to vote - and watch out for mailers

Silver City Daily Press, Syndicated content|Updated Oct 4, 2022

Brace yourself. Election season is picking up momentum, and citizens can expect at least another month’s worth of robocalls from campaign phone banks and blaring TV ads. You may have also found another alarming symptom of midterm fever: mysterious mailers warning that you may not be properly registered to vote. If they look suspicious to you — you are right. Two of these official-looking letters landed in my post office box, warning, “Someone at this address may not be registered to vote.” For a citizen who is passion...

  • Opinion: Be glad about what's not going wrong

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Updated Oct 4, 2022

It’s easy to focus on our problems; on what’s going wrong. It’s harder to notice what’s not going wrong right now. It’s good to find a balance between the two. I’m thankful we didn’t have a devastating hurricane blow through this area last week. I’m also glad we aren’t in the middle of a violent war, trying to defend our homes from the military of an invading government from a neighboring country. Not everyone in the world can say the same. Shouldn’t we be grateful for the pr...

the Staff of The News|Updated Oct 4, 2022

SANTA FE – Livestock theft is to be prosecuted for each occurrence of theft rather than a separate charge for each animal allegedly stolen, the state Supreme Court ruled in an opinion released Monday. According to a news release from the Administrative Office of the Courts, in a unanimous opinion, the state’s highest court provided the legal reasoning for a decision it announced from the bench earlier this year in a consolidated appeal involving cases awaiting trial for allegedly stealing cattle in Otero County.
