  • Commentary: Changing a culture is elusive and hard

Jon Mark Beilue, Sports columnist|Updated Sep 27, 2022

Texas Tech staggered Texas with a fourth-quarter comeback. The Red Raiders were on the verge of a win but somehow the Longhorns tied the score and now the game was in overtime. Texas got a quick touchdown. As for Tech, it was a fourth-down interception. Game over. But enough about 2020, which was a 63-56 Longhorn win. Actually, that loss is relevant – almost as much as Saturday’s 37-34 overtime win was for Tech over these same Longhorns. If the Red Raiders make one play in...

the Staff of The News|Updated Sep 27, 2022

MELROSE — The Melrose Buffaloes needed a little spark on Friday night, and they certainly got one from senior Jaryn Bruce. Leading Tatum just 8-0 at halftime, Bruce forced and recovered a fumble, returning it 36 yards for a touchdown, then blocked a punt and carried it in from 2 yards out as the Buffs (3-3) eventually thumped the Coyotes 38-6. It was a rematch of last year’s 8-man state championship at Tatum, which the Coyotes won 22-14. Sophomore quarterback Josiah Roybal ran 6 yards for a second-quarter tally, and fre...

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 27, 2022

CLOVIS - To say it's been a rough start to the 2022 football season for Clovis High's football team would be putting it mildly. Still, there's some light at the end of the tunnel as the Wildcats (0-6) get ready to start District 5-6A play on Friday at Albuquerque High. None of the five district teams comes in with a winning record - Santa Fe Capital posted the best pre-district mark at 3-3. Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 27, 2022

PORTALES - In any sport, if you can't score, it's hard to win. For a long time now, the Eastern New Mexico University women's soccer team has had to deal with that against Angelo State, and it was no different on Saturday as the 25th-ranked Rambelles made a first-half goal stand up for a 1-0 Lone Star Conference victory at Greyhound Stadium. ENMU is now 3-24-1 all-time against Angelo, and has lost 13 in a row by a combined 27-3 tally. That said, the last three and six of the...

  • Opinion: Ranked-choice better vote method

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Updated Sep 27, 2022

If you ask me, a big reason why democracy in America is in trouble is because of the way we’ve set it up. First, there’s our Electoral College for electing presidents. By using state electors for selecting the overall winner through an antiquated Electoral College, instead of the majority of all voters, a lot of votes end up not mattering. For example, if you’ve been a Trump supporter in New Mexico, your vote for president in 2020 didn’t count toward the final tally that gave Biden the election. All of this state’s five elec...

  • Opinion: Don't make enemies over politics

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Updated Sep 27, 2022

Politics divides. If you distrust your neighbor because of political differences, it’s not your neighbor -- or you -- who’s at fault. It’s politics. Some would have you believe we are at war with each other, but your neighbors aren’t the enemy, even if they follow the enemy. Or if you do. Don’t let politics make you hate each other -- that would be a tragedy. I’ve heard people claim “everything is political.” This is not a healthy way of looking at life -- it’s not even a...

  • Opinion: Take Putin nuclear threat seriously, but maybe not too seriously

    Bloomberg News, Syndicated content|Updated Sep 27, 2022

Russian President Vladimir Putin has raised anew the possibility he might use nuclear weapons against Ukraine to prevail in a conflict going sideways. The smart money says he won’t, because doing so — or otherwise expanding the conflict drastically — wouldn’t make a bad situation any better. Yet the smart money might not have predicted the choices that set Putin down this path in the first place. Much of Putin’s televised speech last week was a repetition of the familiar. He again blamed the U.S., the North Atlantic...

  • Remembering days as a Greyhound

    Betty Williamson, Local columnist|Updated Sep 27, 2022

As Eastern New Mexico University welcomes its alumni family to Portales for homecoming this weekend, I find myself remembering my own days as a Greyhound. They included -- from day one -- memorable encounters with the one and only Dallan Sanders, often at his beautiful home just south of campus. Sanders was the director of housing when I arrived in 1979, one of the first and friendliest faces new students met as we straggled onto campus. The home he shared with his wife,...

Michelle Lujan Grisham how they felt about her plan to spend $10 million to build a clinic near the Texas border in Las Cruces that would provide abortion services and other reproductive health care. Within hours of announcing she was designating the funding from her capital outlay money in the upcoming legislative session, the governor started to receive emails from New Mexicans who were incensed by the decision, according to documents obtained under a public records request....
