    Jamie Cushman|Updated Sep 14, 2018

CLOVIS — Curry County Commissioner Chet Spear began Friday’s commission meeting by addressing the two absences on the dais. Ben McDaniel, he said, was out of town on vacation. After a long pause, Spear reported Commissioner Angelina Baca was “... not here.” Spear said later no one on the commission knew where Baca might be. Asked about Baca’s absence after the meeting, County Manager Lance Pyle said he had not heard from her. Reached by phone after the meeting on Friday, Baca told The News that she missed the meeting b... Full story

  • Clovis falls to 2-2, loses at Lubbock Monterey

    Peter Stein|Updated Sep 14, 2018

LUBBOCK — Say this for the Clovis High football team — the Wildcats never gave up Friday when down by a bunch against Monterey at Lubbock’s Lowrey Field. Unfortunately, the ’Cats were in never-give-up mode because they gave up a three-touchdown lead before halftime. And though they clawed back, even made it a little interesting in the fourth, the Wildcats fell to Monterey 34-21 and endured their second straight loss, dropping to 2-2 on the season. “The good thing about it...

  • Hounds need huge upset to avoid 0-3 hole

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Sep 14, 2018

PORTALES — A Greyhound football team that gained national recognition last year for nursing a lead and keeping the ball out of the other team’s hands finds itself at 0-2, and so far no lead to nurse in 120 minutes of forgettable action. Eastern New Mexico will now welcome ... No. 1-ranked, defending national champion Texas A&M-Commerce. Kicked while they’re down, or a chance to get up? Second-year ENMU coach Kelley Lee is preaching the opportunity for the latter. “You can go t...

The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 14, 2018

ALBUQUERQUE — The Clovis High girls soccer team entered Friday with an 8-0 mark, including a 2-0 mark in games decided by eight goals or more. Make that 8-1 and 2-1. Zaria Katesigwa also scored twice for Albuquerque High (4-2), which outshot Clovis 14-7 and made the most of those opp...

  • Goddard pummels Portales, 28-0

The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 14, 2018

ROSWELL — Friday’s night game at Goddard can be chalked up as a learning experience for Portales football. However, that learning experience meant getting schooled by the 5A Rockets, in a 28-0 defeat. “I thought our defense played well all night long, but we kept giving up field position the entire time,” Rams coach Jaime Ramirez said. “We just couldn’t get anything going on offense. We would have a really nice play, and then we’d commit a holding penalty. “The defense...

  • Greyhound rally falls short

    Eric Murray|Updated Sep 14, 2018

PORTALES - With their backs against the wall, Eastern New Mexico volleyball was in a tough spot. A rough opening set and a second set that got away from the Hounds, made it appear as if ENMU was on its way to being swept in its home-opener against Angelo State on Friday night. However, looks can be deceiving. Even after losing their team co-captain and one of their top players, Sarah Tuioti-Mariner, in the second set, the Greyhounds found a way to step up and keep hope alive....
