The Pioneers hammered two Amarillo pitchers for 16 hits including six extra-base hits. Right-hander Mel Kramer won his 10th game in relief for the Clovis club. • Faith: Got my sweet tooth and my love of walking from Dad

    Patti Dobson, Religion columnist|Updated Aug 31, 2021

“You are free to choose, but you are not free from the consequences of your choice.” — Zig Ziglar Smart man, that Zig. I grew up with a version of that thought, long before I ever heard of Zig Ziglar. That sentiment was woven into all of childhood and teen (angst) lessons, courtesy of The Dad. He repeated often enough, “your choice, your consequence.” And The Dad, and Zig, are correct. I am free to choose, and boy, did those chickens, er consequences, come home to roost. Oh...

  • Faith: God is our creator, father - and even producer

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated Aug 31, 2021

My good friend Darrell Bledsoe, whose list of incredible accomplishments as a music producer, musician, choral director, songwriter, arranger (and the list could go on) is more than impressive, was my friend before he was the producer of my own four albums of music. Early on in our really enjoyable journey together, as we were beginning work on the first album, Darrell smiled and said, “Curtis, I’ll have a lot of suggestions along the way in this project, but I’ll alway...

  • Thanks to my grandfather for the orchard he grew for us

    Betty Williamson, Local columnist|Updated Aug 31, 2021

All it took to make me nostalgic this week was a box of ripe peaches. I grew up less than a quarter mile from a veritable garden of Eden, although I didn’t properly appreciate it until after I grew up. My grandfather — “Pa” — was the orchardist. He worked most of his magic long before I was born, although he still deftly wielded a hoe into his 96th year. By the time I was old enough to toddle in the shade of his orchard, his life was drawing to a close, and I never got to re...

  • Steers, Mustangs set to renew rivalry

    Dave Wagner, Staff writer|Updated Aug 31, 2021

BOVINA — Farwell and Bovina were victorious in their season openers last week, so both sides are feeling pretty good heading into Friday’s 7 p.m. (CDT) rivalry clash. “I think we match up fairly well with them,” Mustangs coach Coby Emery said. “We’re both young teams. They’ve got a new starting quarterback (junior Alec Actkinson), and it always takes a while to catch on to things.” On the other hand, Actkinson is replacing older brother Leefe, who graduated in the spring. Alec Actkinson helped pilot the Steers past Ral...

We still have things to work on, and I hope (the win) inspires us to im...

    Dave Wagner, Staff writer|Updated Aug 31, 2021

PORTALES — Entering her first year as the Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer coach, Abbey Barnum wasn’t all that surprised to find her squad near the bottom of the league’s preseason poll. Picked for 12th in the 14-team circuit, the Greyhounds begin to try proving their detractors wrong when they open the campaign with a noon match on Thursday against Colorado State-Pueblo at Greyhound Stadium. PORTALES - When Tye Hiatt was hired in April as the 17th head football coach in Eastern New Mexico University's history, he said it wasn't a hard transition for him. "It's been a great adjustment," said Hiatt, who came to ENMU after three seasons as the offensive coordinator at Division II Shepherd University in West Virginia. "I'm originally from eastern Oregon and I grew up on a ranch. Coming to a community and a school like Eastern has been great." The Hounds have three...

  • Rams make use of bye week

    Dave Wagner, Staff writer|Updated Aug 31, 2021

PORTALES - If they had a choice, most football coaches would hardly opt to have a bye in the second week of the season. For the Portales High Rams, though, it may have come at the right time, coach Jaime Ramirez said, after dropping the season opener on Aug. 21 at Hope Christian 28-14. They now play nine consecutive weeks to end the regular campaign, beginning with Friday's 7 p.m. home opener against West Las Vegas at Greyhound Stadium. "I definitely think we've gotten...

  • Opinion: Good time to be looking for work

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Updated Aug 31, 2021

If you’re an American worker, there’s cause for a real celebration this Labor Day. The economy is flush with jobs, wages are going up and employers are so desperate to find workers they’re offering benefits for what used to be starter jobs for teenagers. If you’re looking for work, you’ve got plenty to pick from, unless your skill sets are stuck in the old economy. Technology has or is changing just about every job out there, so workers must adapt. That’s easier for the younger generations who have grown up with their eyes...

  • Opinion: Not anti-vaccine but anti-mandate

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Updated Aug 31, 2021

I am not anti-vaccine. I’ve been vaccinated for a few things in my adult life because I think the risk of those vaccines is less than the risk or inconvenience of the diseases they are supposed to prevent. I wouldn’t bother getting a quasi-vaccine that neither prevents the vaccinated from getting nor spreading a disease I’m not particularly worried about; a sort-of-vaccine that doesn’t even last a few years, to moderate a new, slightly more dangerous, cold virus. A cold vi...

    Albuquerque Journal, Syndicated content|Updated Aug 31, 2021

Doctors and nurses have cajoled and pleaded, talking about how they are watching patients struggle to breathe before they ultimately go on a ventilator and die. The governor has offered cash incentives and a lottery and alluded to the possibility of going back to lockdown-style measures much more restrictive than masking up indoors as the highly contagious delta variant takes hold and hospital intensive care units fill up. Despite these efforts and many others, an estimated 500,000 New Mexicans who are eligible to get...

  • Wayland alumni recognized

    Cindy Kleyn-Kennedy, Local columnist|Updated Aug 31, 2021

“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free…” are among the last lines of Emma Lazarus’ sonnet, The New Colossus, written for a fundraiser for the pedestal on which the Statue of Liberty still rests. Regardless of one’s stance on immigration issues, as a public school district we welcome all students; our doors and hearts are open to all who cross our thresholds. I’m reminded of our bilingual programs from La Casita and Lockwood elementary...
