  • H.S. FOOTBALL: Clovis, Portales scrimmage Friday night

    Peter Stein|Updated Aug 18, 2017

High school football scrimmages are almost like playing with house money. They don’t count in the standings, don’t cost teams much barring injury, but they are among the most valuable matchups of the season. Coaches get opportunities to see their players go up against actual opponents from other schools, not each other. They get chances to see how their teams stack up against specific schemes. They can finally solve position battles. So, although Clovis and Portales are a week away from kicking it off for real, they head int...

  • WOMEN'S SOCCER: ENMU is sixth in LSC poll

The Staff of The News|Updated Aug 18, 2017

RICHARDSON, Texas — Perhaps it will serve as motivation for the Eastern New Mexico women’s soccer team. The Lady Greyhounds were projected for sixth place in the 2017 Lone Star Conference women’s soccer preseason poll released Wednesday. The Lady ’Hounds earned 38 total points. • We are living letters of Christian life

    Judy Brandon|Updated Aug 18, 2017

With the start of a new school year, I’m reminded of the women in my family — a family of teachers and so many memories. One such memory reflects on my sister Susie’s teaching career. Sometimes she had students whose parents were in the military, and when the children would move away, they’d still participate in the postcard project by sending back postcards from their new location. In addition, Susie w...

  • Short words, old words, best words: God is love

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Aug 18, 2017

Winston Churchill asserted, “Short words are best, and the old words when short are best of all.” So may I suggest three — very short and very old; when lined up and strung together, they are the best three that could possibly be. God is love These words are chiseled into the rock, woven into the fabric, of the universe. More than that, if anything could be more, they are living and implanted by the Author of life into its every cell, resonating in every breath and heart...
