  • Faith: I love to sing for the joy of God

    Curtis Shelburne, Local columnist|Updated Aug 2, 2022

If you know me, you know that I like to sing. I’ll sing when nobody’s listening. I’ll sing when 12 people are listening. I’ll sing when 612 are listening. Give me half a chance, and I will sing. I’ve sung all of my life. It was not unusual for our family to sing together at home. (I know. Too often, families today can hardly imagine ever being at home. And singing at home? “Are you kidding? Did you grow up on Mars?”) We really did. Not the Mars part. The singing part. I also...

  • Faith: August means double helping of memories

    Patti Dobson, Local columnist|Updated Aug 2, 2022

I’ve been thinking about my dad more so than usual. Probably because it’s August, his birth month. August has always been a time of celebration because of my dad’s birthday. I’d start practi-baking the beginning of the month for the grand shindig on the 31st. Even though it’s been a little over four years since he’s been gone, that practice hasn’t stopped. I always make my Grandma Sarah’s spice cake during this time of year. This recipe is about a hundred years old. It belonge...

  • Opinion: Hoping we'll survive beyond 2100

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Updated Aug 2, 2022

Downsizing for an old-school media junkie involves lots of newspapers and magazines, the hardcopy kind, where the first draft of history was laid out for all the world to consume through linear reading. I’ve got an intimidating number of newspapers laying around my house; almost as many as I’ve got laying around my newspaper office. So I opted for an easier path, though still daunting, by jumping into the boxes of magazines I’ve kept in storage all these years. I suppose I was waiting for the day when historians, or at least...

  • Opinion: Needs should be met by the people

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Updated Aug 2, 2022

People see me say I don’t want government doing something and often jump to the conclusion I don’t want that thing done at all. Sometimes they are right, as in the case of legislation enforcement. More often they are wrong, as in the case of environmental protection, security, or justice. Government is more likely to make a mess of it. I love the natural environment, which is why I oppose letting government control it or set rules concerning it. I’ve seen what happens when...

  • Remembering humble kindness of longtime resident Bill Wood

    Betty Williamson, Local columnist|Updated Aug 2, 2022

In a world that often seems to focus on the loudest voice or the most outrageous claim, it has been immensely heartwarming this week to see the outpouring of love for the passing of a Portales man who was remembered with words like these: Kind. Gentle. Humble. Someone who found the good in everyone he met. Thankfully, Bill Wood, who died July 27 at the age of 85, met a lot of us along the way. Even if you weren’t fortunate enough to know him, odds are you’ve seen him at a pian...
