  • Faith: Finding it's hard to gripe and give thanks at the same time

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated Jun 14, 2022

I feel like I’m writing this particular column about five months early. It’s the kind of thing that I’d normally center on just before Thanksgiving. As I write, it is not Thanksgiving. It is not November. It is mid-June. We’ve not even reached the summer solstice yet. This year, that astronomic event officially occurs at 3:14 a.m. Tuesday (MDT). Set an alarm on your phone. But it certainly feels like summer. We hit 108 degrees a day ago. The plants in my yard were droopin...

  • Opinion: Fight inflation with green energy

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Updated Jun 14, 2022

We’ve been living with inflation all our lives. That’s why old folks can remember when a gallon of gas cost under a buck and bread cost about a quarter a loaf. But now it’s getting out of hand. The most recent Consumer Price Index report shows a whopping 8.6% rise in prices over the past 12 months. Prices are going up on gasoline and diesel, food and clothing, housing and household items, air travel and new and used vehicles, medical costs and recreation. Wages and salaries are also going up, but it’s not keeping up for eve...

  • Vow to be a kinder, gentler finger pointer in future

    Betty Williamson, Local columnist|Updated Jun 14, 2022

A good many years ago, I was visiting a friend at his house and offered to move a load of freshly laundered clothing from his washer to his dryer. I asked where the lint trap was located so I could empty it before starting a new load. His response: “What’s a lint trap?” Suffice it to say, the fact that his dryer had never burst into flames would clearly qualify as a miracle. I gave him no small amount of grief for the oversight. After all, who wouldn’t know to empty a dryer li...

  • Opinion: Government crushes individuality

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Updated Jun 14, 2022

Everyone has their own unique personal preferences. This is probably a good thing since it makes life interesting and keeps us from all fighting over the exact same stuff. Think how boring it would be if everyone preferred identical things. Variety is the spice of life. As long as everyone remembers their preferences are only preferences, not a matter of one being right and the other being wrong, there’s no problem. It’s only when people try to impose their preferences on eve...

That’s because he was competing in a rodeo in California when the Clovis competition ended. Rutherford, fourth in the world’s champion cowboy title race for 1951, took first place in bareback bronc riding and steer wrestling in Clovis before heading west. Another big winner in the weekend event: Roy Lewis of House won the c...

PORTALES — A group of Roosevelt County citizens, most noting their Republican party affiliation, plan on auditing county ballots for the 2020 presidential election next Wednesday. The matter came up during the “public requests” portion of Monday’s Roosevelt County Commission meeting. Person after person came to the speaker’s podium at the session to tell commissioners of the lack of confidence that they and their friends have in voting in New Mexico. Speakers praised the work of Roosevelt County Clerk Mandi Park and count...
