    David Grieder, Staff Writer|Updated May 25, 2017

CLOVIS — “Cannon's an island; there's just no water around. But I definitely include Clovis and Portales as part of that island when it comes to family and community,” said Col. Ben Maitre, reflecting on his time as the outgoing commander of the Air Force base’s 27th Special Operations Wing. Maitre came to Cannon AFB in February 2015, on a short notice reassignment from his position as commander of the 353rd Special Operations Group at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan. An elaborately decorated sword and helmet from his tim...

    Dnieka Hartsfield|Updated May 21, 2017

The time has come again to shop your discounted fall/winter clothing. As the school year comes to an end, sweaters and jackets go on sale. Whatever your thoughts on the roller coaster weather sweeping the...

  • Celebrating success

    David Grieder|Updated May 21, 2017

CLOVIS — Families took pictures with painted horses and cow statues. Spectators bought popcorn from the concession booth and examined the bleacher seats for an available spot in good view of the main attraction. In the crowd of thousands Friday night filling the vast real estate of the Curry County Events Center, photograph flashes and glowing video camera orbs were all pointed to the figures in shimmering purple robes, advancing one at a time across a temporary stage to r...

    Alisa Boswell|Updated May 21, 2017

PORTALES — There she is — an unhappy Miss New Mexico. • RoboMaid more entertaining than helpful

    Karl Terry, Columnist|Updated May 21, 2017

A robot vacuum sounded like a good idea. ‘The Jetsons’ had Rosie and recently we had friends who said they loved their new Roomba. Why not? When I located one on sale I couldn’t resist. It wasn’t the Roomba brand name, but what the heck. Anything to stay ahead of the dog hair, I thought. This thing came out of the box practically ready to go to work. I plugged the charging unit into the wall and then eased the little robot onto the contacts and a pleasing musical tone and a f...

  • Being ugly carries certain benefits

    Wendel Sloan, Columnist|Updated May 21, 2017

In “The Benefits of Being Ugly,” Joe Carter wrote: “Ugly people are the majority … appreciated for their personality … and funnier. Ugly is inevitable. If we live long enough we all eventually get ugly. Some of us fortunate ones just get there first and have time to get used to it.” I am one of the fortunate ones. In junior high school choir we sang: “I know how ugly I are, “I know how ugly I are, “But my face I don’t mind it “‘Cause I’m the one behind it; “It’s the one in the...

About 80 people were injured. Witnesses said the tornado picked up a 5,000 pound gasoline storage tank and dropped it in a lake more than a mile a...

The recent indictment of Gary Gregor, a former Santa Fe and Española grade-school teacher, has brought his unfortunate professional history around the West back into focus. Now, again, parents and taxpayers in New Mexico — and maybe elsewhere — are left to wonder how Gregor ever got into the position to commit the numerous counts of child sex abuse that he’s accused of. In a case handled by the New Mexico Attorney General’s Office, Gregor faces three counts of rape of a minor, five counts of criminal sexual contact with a m...
