David Stevens, The Staff of The News|Updated Apr 25, 2023

On this date ... 1901: Thomas Edward “Black Jack” Ketchum, described as the “most noted desperado of the Southwest” by the Galveston Daily News, was hanged in Clayton. Ketchum, a self-confessed train robber accused of multiple crimes including murder, was also a rancher near Tucumcari who rode on many trail drives. He was hanged for a failed train robbery in which no one was killed. They hung him so hard, the history books tell us, his head came off. The native Texan, who los...

  • Faith: Still a lot to discover at grandparents' old place

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated Apr 25, 2023

    G. K. Chesterton wrote that there are no uninteresting things – “only uninterested people.” And he’s right, you know. I just returned from a few days with my three brothers at Robert Lee, Texas. For almost 40 years, two times a year, we’ve met at our maternal grandparents’ old place there. For more than a few of those years, our dad was with us. Precious time. A precious place. Granddaddy Key had that little house built in 1928, so it’s sneaking up on 100 years old. We’ve pi...

Grant McGee, The Staff of The News|Updated Apr 25, 2023

People in the Sunrise area on the south side of Clovis were wondering about those explosions they heard Sunday morning. “Those were exploding tires from a vehicle fire,” Clovis Fire Department (CFD) Battalion Chief Chris Elam said. Elam said CFD personnel and vehicles were called out to the blaze in an alley near the 600 block of Dawn Loop Sunday at about 9:40 a.m. “It was a 2015 Toyota Tacoma stolen from Roosevelt County,” Elam said. “It was a total loss.” The fire is under investigation by the state fire marshal’s o...

  • Curry county commission tables burn ban

Grant McGee, The Staff of The News|Updated Apr 25, 2023

Apparently driven by Curry County Commission Chair Robert Thornton's words, "I don't like to tell people what to do on their private property." On Tuesday, commissioners tabled a request by the county's Fire and Safety Director to declare a "fire danger emergency" in Curry County. Appearing at Tuesday's regular session of the County Commission, Fire and Safety Director Michael Booth had sought the emergency declaration "to get ahead of the game" in terms of possibly cutting...

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Apr 25, 2023

CLOVIS – Weather conditions were more suited for maybe mid-March than late April in Clovis High’s Wildcat Invitational on Monday at Colonial Park Golf Course, and hardly anyone was really satisfied with how it went. Clovis Christian boys coach Trent McKay said the Eagles were a bit off their game overall, even though they shot a four-man total of 350 for an 11-stroke margin over Clovis High. The Wildcats, meantime, edged Alamogordo and Roswell High by a stroke in the battle for second place. “We won, but we didn’t play ve...

  • I remain optimistic 'even when there is no factual basis for it'

    Betty Williamson, Local columnist|Updated Apr 25, 2023

I heard a timely quote this week from Ira Glass, the host of the National Public Radio show, “This American Life.” “I am optimistic,” Glass said, “even when there is no factual basis for it … at all.” So am I, Mr. Glass, especially as the days grow longer and garden centers start to bustle with those most optimistic of humans: gardeners. The reason this quote resonated with me so much is that I not only don’t have a green thumb, I don’t even have a green fingernail. Flowe...

  • Opinion: Solution to lawlessness is discipline

    Michael Reagan, Syndicated content|Updated Apr 25, 2023

Violent events in the last few days prove how edgy Americans are. A 16-year-old boy who knocked on the wrong door was shot through the glass by a scared old man. A 20-year-old was shot because she pulled into the wrong driveway. A cheerleader was shot after she accidentally got in the wrong car at a shopping center. Everyone is so on edge today because of the madness and lawlessness they see on TV and the Internet. Every day brings new video of gas station smash-and-grabs, fla...

  • Opinion: Let's not fill jail with those who violate city code

David Stevens, The Staff of The News|Updated Apr 25, 2023

First they came for Bullet Bob. Now the city of Clovis is after little ol’ ladies who can’t push a lawn mower. Violate city decrees, and you just might find yourself in front of a judge facing “fines, fees and possible jail time.” That’s what we learned at Thursday’s City Commission meeting. Bullet Bob Vilandry’s crime was posting signs at his collectibles store on Main Street. The signs asked motorists to reserve a couple of spaces for Vilandry’s customers who otherwise r...

  • Opinion: Free speech will survive Fox suit

    Walter Rubel, Syndicated content|Updated Apr 25, 2023

In 1981, Sally Field won a Golden Globe for her portrayal of an ambitious and reckless newspaper reporter in the film “Absence of Malice.” The reporter uses information leaked by a federal prosecutor for a front-page story wrongfully accusing the character played by Paul Newman of the murder of a union boss. The evil newspaper gets away with it because of a 1964 Supreme Court ruling. The film’s title comes from the standard set in the case of New York Times Co. v Sullivan. Former Public Safety Commissioner L.B. Sulli...

  • Cannon airshow attracts capacity crowd

Steve Hansen, The Staff of The News|Updated Apr 25, 2023

Cannon Air Force Base has convincing proof the region missed its airshows. Officials said a capacity crowd of 11,500 people were on the grounds by 12:45 p.m. Saturday for "Wings Over Cannon," the base's first airshow in five years. They came despite blustery weather -- and more wanted in. A line of cars stretched more than a mile away from Cannon in the westbound lanes of U.S. Route 60-84 when officials began turning them away. Some vehicles pulled over in a wide spot off the...

  • Lincoln-Jackson time capsule opened Saturday

Steve Hansen, The Staff of The News|Updated Apr 25, 2023

Bestella Gardner remembered the PVC-pipe time capsule near the flagpole at Lincoln-Jackson School in Clovis and remembered it was supposed to be exhumed in 2020, 25 years after its burial. It didn't happen then, as a lot of things didn't happen, because of the COVID 19 pandemic. But on Saturday, two days after the 28th anniversary of its burial, the past was revisited. Gardner, who had been a secretary at Lincoln-Jackson for 30 years before she retired in 2010, was among an es...

  • Faulty equipment cause of area power outage Monday

The Staff of The News|Updated Apr 25, 2023

A power outage that affected an estimated 6,000 Xcel customers from Clovis to Muleshoe is being blamed on faulty power equipment. Xcel spokesman Wes Reeves reports in a news release the power outage began about 10:55 a.m. Monday when “several breakers tripped at the Curry County Station.” Reeves describes the station as “an important hub for the transmission network serving the area.” Crews entered the substation and traced the outage origin to faulty transformer bushings that insulate the connections between the power l...
