  • Bee colony latest addition at Natural History Museum

    Helena Rodriguez

A colony of buzzing insects will mind their own bees wax when they arrive at their new home inside the Natural History Museum at Eastern New Mexico University. However, the public will get a chance to check into the bees’ business. A bee hive has been constructed inside the Natural History Museum at Roosevelt Hall and is awaiting Thursday’s arrival of its new guests — 30,000 to 50,000 European-bred bees — who are coming by way of Texas to inhabit the 20 square foot plexiglas display. “What is neat about the bees...

  • Roosevelt General still wrestling with clinic certification

    PNT Staff

The Roosevelt General Hospital Board of Directors is continuing its effort to have its clinics federally approved as hospital-based rural health clinics. The topic was discussed during Tuesday’s board meeting. A letter of approval from the department of health, which has been received, is only one step. A state survey or inspection is required to determine the need for the clinics, but CMS — Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services — did not fund the states for the survey, said James D’Agostino, CEO and adm...

  • Subsidies give ag producers mixed signals

Editorial When the world’s finance ministers meet under the auspices of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, as they did in Washington earlier this month, they usually rub their chins and harrumph portentously about arcane financial matters. But this year the meetings tried to focus on a more tangible problem: rising prices for food that threaten actual starvation in some of the poorer countries in the world. Unfortunately, since the most effective approaches to these problems involve reducing or ending g...

  • Conversation topics often a tossup

    Kevin Wilson

Generally, when I’m talking to friends, it’s a tossup between sports, entertainment and politics. Some days I can decide on one, but most days I can’t. With this in mind, let’s take a quick shot at all three: Sports: Houston Astros shortstop Miguel Tejada has come clean about his age. Tuesday night, ESPN aired its “E:60” news show, which showed Tejada walking out of an interview when he was shown a copy of his birth certificate dated May 25, 1974. The problem? Tejada’s birthday is listed in the Astros’ media guide as May 25...

  • GI Bill users should see benefits increase

The Bush administration has endorsed a House bill that would improve the Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB) education benefits in several ways including with a 31 percent jump in monthly benefits and a new $500-a-month stipend to help cover college living expenses. The administration’s aim is not only to improve veterans’ benefits in wartime but to derail a far more costly GI Bill reform package that Virginia Democrat Jim Webb, in just his second year as a senator, is shepherding toward likely enactment with tenacity and timely compro...

  • Republican candidates share conservative, education platforms

    Kevin Wilson

Sen. Clint Harden, R-Clovis, remembers the late 1970s, and a meeting for the Curry County Republican Party was three people. He was much happier at Tuesday’s Republican candidate forum at the Clovis-Carver Public Library, with 17 speakers representing 10 races. But he knows there’s work ahead. “I think Republicans are really going to be sailing into a tough wind,” Harden said of November’s general elections. “There’s this real desire for change, and it’s going to be tough on incumbents.” Harden was one of two state legisla...

  • Local girl named new Masked Rider

    CNJ staff

The lineage of Texas Tech’s Masked Rider is staying in the area. Ashley Hartzog, a senior animal science and Spanish major from Farwell, will replace Texico’s Kevin Burns as Texas Tech’s mascot, according to a school press release. In donning the rider’s mask, Hartzog fulfills an ambition that took seed when she first saw the iconic mascot at a Red Raider football game when she was 5 years old. “It’s still hard to believe that I was selected to be the Masked Rider,” she said. “Every time I see a Masked Rider logo or image o... Full story

  • Barry, Ranchvale Elementary Schools rezoned

If it were up to fourth-grader Dustin Miller, he’d like to stay at Barry Elementary School. But Dustin and his family live in a section of base housing the Clovis Board of Education rezoned Tuesday to Ranchvale Elementary School. Clovis Municipal Schools Superintendent Rhonda Seidenwurm said the move would keep Ranchvale at a sizable population while Cannon Air Force Base’s population is low and allow Barry to take in more students as the city’s population grows. The move would also consolidate all elementary students in mi... Full story

  • Events center top County Commission issue

    Liliana Castillo

CNJ staff photo: Liliana Castillo Republican candidates spoke about their candidacies to members of the community Tuesday at Clovis-Carver Public Library in a public forum. Those seeking Republican nods for the Curry County Commission agreed Clovis needs beautification. They also agreed zoning isn’t the answer. They also agreed the still-in-construction Curry County Events Center would be a concern, with first-year losses estimated as high as $500,000. “Our challenge is to find ways to cut losses,” said District 5 candi...

  • April 23, 2008 Police Blotter

Samplings of recent calls received by Clovis-area law enforcement officers, according to reports: Around 8 p.m. April 15 an officer responded to a park in the 2000 block of Mitchell Street for a stolen vehicle report. A man told the officer he parked his vehicle at the park and left for about half-an-hour and when he returned it was gone. He said he believes whoever stole it must have been familiar with it because the only way to open it was to pull a string under the fender. The officer documented the vehicle description....

  • Pope's visit should make U.S. better

Freedom New Mexico The most vivid impression most Americans have of Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to the United States is likely to be the attention he paid to the clergy sexual abuse scandal that has rocked the Roman Catholic Church in the United States (and in other countries as well). He brought it up unbidden at almost every stop along the way, from interviews on the plane from Rome to his final Mass at Yankee Stadium. Perhaps his most important act, undertaken outside the view of pervasive television cameras, was his m...
