  • Trump indictment first in string of potential legal troubles

    Bloomberg News, Syndicated content|Updated Mar 30, 2023

Donald Trump has been indicted by a grand jury in Manhattan on charges related to the payment of hush money to a porn star during his 2016 campaign. The prosecution of a former president is unprecedented and certain to kick off a political firestorm and a fierce courtroom fight — but the case isn’t the only legal challenge facing Trump going forward. The indictment in New York won’t stop federal and state prosecutors in other jurisdictions from bringing their own charg...

Grant McGee, The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 28, 2023

The region's Republican lawmakers and Clovis Mayor Mike Morris mostly expressed disappointment Monday as they recapped the state's legislative session that wrapped up earlier this month. Morris, speaking at a luncheon hosted by the Clovis/Curry County Chamber of Commerce, expressed disappointment at several measures that were passed in the session, not mentioning particulars. "It breaks my heart about the direction of our state," he said. Rep. Martin Zamora said he was...

  • Faith: Small churches can use help and encouragement

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated Mar 28, 2023

No doubt about it, I have a heart for small churches. And that means, most churches. Don’t get me wrong. I’m thankful for churches of all sizes who preach the good news about Christ. And all churches, whatever their size, have their share of challenges. According to Aaron Earl’s article in Lifeway Research, based on a 2020 “Faith Communities Today” (FACT) study surveying 15,000 “faith communities,” 70% of the churches surveyed had less than 100 members and averaged 65 i...

  • Hounds settle for series split with Falcons

the Staff of The News|Updated Mar 28, 2023

ODESSA, Texas – While Eastern New Mexico University is still eighth and would qualify for the Lone Star Conference baseball tournament if the season ended now, the Greyhounds didn’t do themselves any favors on Sunday. With a chance to win the series, ENMU surrendered 11 runs between the second and fourth innings and absorbed a 13-3 shellacking against Texas-Permian Basin, which ended it on the 10-run rule in the bottom of the seventh. Heading into a weekend series with third-place Texas-Tyler at Greyhound Field, ENMU (14...

the Staff of The News|Updated Mar 28, 2023

DEXTER – Portales High’s softball team struck early and often on Saturday night, and the Lady Rams completed a run to the championship with a 9-2 victory over Dexter in the finals of the eight-team Lindsey Calloway Invite. Senior Abby Marquez went 2-for-4 with two home runs and five RBIs, and tossed a six-hitter in the circle with eight strikeouts. She broke the game open with a three-run homer in the second to put the Lady Rams (6-4) up 4-0, then added a two-run shot in the sixth for an 8-0 lead before the Lady Demons (4-...

  • Lady Coyotes dominate Logan

the Staff of The News|Updated Mar 28, 2023

LOGAN – It's probably safe to say Logan's softball team is glad it won't be seeing Dora again any time soon. The Lady Longhorns have opened their season with home-and-home doubleheaders against the Lady Coyotes, and they've been run-ruled in all four contests. Dora (5-2) won on Monday 25-8 and 20-8 as junior Faith Jasso went 5-for-5 with a home run in each game. The Lady Coyotes won the opener in four innings on the 15-run rule, and Game 2 in five on the 10-run rule. They scor...

The 15-date spring schedule is set to culminate with an intrasquad game at Greyhound Stadium on April 21. Lee, rehired in January after leading the Greyhounds to a 21-14 record from 2017-19, said about 70 players are taking part in the spring workouts. “They’re all putting in the physical and mental work,” Lee said. “Every practice, we’re getting better.” The players worked out in shorts for th...

  • ENMU garners season's first softball sweep

the Staff of The News|Updated Mar 28, 2023

ODESSA, Texas – Currently just on the outside of the Lone Star Conference tournament picture, Eastern New Mexico University’s softball team came up with its first series sweep of the season on Sunday. After beating Texas-Permian Basin 5-2 on Saturday, the Greyhounds (20-19, 12-15 LSC) notched 3-2 and 9-1 wins on Sunday over the Falcons (6-26, 3-21). ENMU is currently 11th – the top 10 of the league’s 15 teams make the tourney – but the Hounds are just behind Texas A&M International (15-19, 11-12) and Texas A&M-Kings...

  • Local hopes to elevate New Mexico with history

    Betty Williamson, Local columnist|Updated Mar 28, 2023

At the age of 93, and after 3 1/2 years of residency in Wheatfields Estates senior living in Clovis, you might expect someone like Lois Barnes to be living a quiet life of retirement. Perhaps you haven’t met her yet. I learned last summer in our first visit that Barnes is a woman on a mission and she’s looking for recruits. “What made Fort Sumner famous?” she asked me the first time I met her, before quickly providing the answer: “Billy the Kid. Is there any proof of that?...

  • Opinion: Is GOP now party of peace and love?

Walter Rubel, The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 28, 2023

I’m not at all comfortable with my new position to the right of Republican leaders on foreign policy. As a child who grew up watching the Vietnam War on the nightly news and fearing it would still be raging when I turned 18, I have always opposed the military adventurism of Republican leaders, whether it was Richard Nixon in Vietnam and Cambodia, Ronald Reagan in Central America or George W. Bush in Iraq. We all knew our roles back then. Republican leaders saw the world as a threat to be neutralized and an economic o...

  • Opinion: Xi, Putin should be our concern

    Michael Reagan, Syndicated content|Updated Mar 28, 2023

Everyone in the national media is worrying about whether Donald Trump is going to be arrested in New York. Not me. In a radio interview with San Diego talk show host Mark Larson, I said I didn’t care what was going to happen to Trump. “What I’m really worried about,” I said to my old friend, “is the meeting going on in Moscow between the two most dangerous men in the world – Xi and Putin.” The head despots of Russia and China were having a meet-up in person to get control o...

  • Opinion: Artificial intelligence just a tech-fancy term meaning more software

    Bloomberg News, Syndicated content|Updated Mar 28, 2023

No one sells the future more masterfully than the tech industry. According to its proponents, we will all live in the “metaverse,” build our financial infrastructure on “web3” and power our lives with “artificial intelligence.” All three of these terms are mirages that have raked in billions of dollars, despite bite back by reality. Artificial intelligence in particular conjures the notion of thinking machines. But no machine can think, and no software is truly intelligent. The phrase alone may be one of the most successful...

  • Fire destroys Portales home

Landry Sena, The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 28, 2023

A house fire last week left a Roosevelt County mother and son without possessions. Angela Lopez, 57, and her son Richie Zambrano, 31, were awakened early Thursday morning to a fire in their home that would quickly take over everything. Zambrano said he was sleeping around 2:30 a.m. when his mom came in to wake him up and told him to get out of their double-wide mobile home west of Portales. Zambrano said, "We just woke up to a fire and from there, we tried to get out." He...
