  • Freshmen help Lady Eagles rally

    Dave Wagner, Staff writer|Updated Feb 1, 2022

CLOVIS - With injuries and COVID sidelining three top players, Hobbs' girls turned to their freshmen class on Friday night - four of them started in a District 4-5A clash against Clovis High at Rock Staubus Gym. For a while, it looked like it might be their undoing. The Lady Wildcats rode four first-half 3-pointers from sophomore guard Zarai Lewis to a 29-20 lead at the break. Then the script was flipped. The Lady Eagles outscored Clovis 18-5 in the third period and added a...

  • Clovis wrestlers struggle against Canyon, Bushland

the Staff of The News|Updated Feb 1, 2022

BUSHLAND, Texas — Trying to build a wrestling program is a process, and Clovis High’s first-year squads are finding that out. The Wildcats and Lady Wildcats came in third on Friday against well-established Canyon and Bushland programs in a triangular competition. “The girls did phenomenal,” CHS coach Eric Zottneck said. “The guys were just ‘out-strengthed.’ They had eight boys — four for each team — who were state champions.” The boys managed just two forfeit wins against Canyon — eighth-grader Nolan Rodriguez at 126 poun...

  • Angelo State posts LSC sweep against Hounds

the Staff of The News|Updated Feb 1, 2022

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Junior guard Payton Brown led four Angelo State players in double figures with a season-best 20 points on Saturday, and the Rambelles relied on stiff defense to subdue Eastern New Mexico University 78-61 in Lone Star Conference women’s play. The Rambelles (7-10, 4-2 LSC), coming off a stunning 67-63 upset of eighth-ranked Lubbock Christian on Thursday, held the Greyhounds to just 32 percent shooting from the floor, including 2-of-15 from 3-point range. In addition, ENMU (8-7, 4-5), which had a thr...

  • CHS swimmers get taste of pool for state meet

the Staff of The News|Updated Feb 1, 2022

ALBUQUERQUE — Saturday’s Tom Casey Memorial Invite swim meet, hosted by Albuquerque Academy, wasn’t exactly what Clovis High co-coach Gordy Westerberg had in mind. In normal meets, he said, teams may have two or three entries in a relay and four individuals per event. This meet restricted teams to one relay and two individuals per event. “My original plan was to focus on the relays and put kids in one individual race, most likely an ‘off’ race — one they normally don’t get to swim — so there went my plan out the window,...

  • Lady Cats edge Portales in overtime

    Dave Wagner, Staff writer|Updated Feb 1, 2022

CLOVIS - Wade Fraze saw a strong effort from his Portales High girls squad under challenging circumstances on Saturday night. He wishes it had come with a victory, but the Clovis High Lady Wildcats were determined not to let that happen. Senior guard Yvonne Fuerte hit a running floater from the left of the lane as time expired in overtime to give Clovis a 55-53 victory at Rock Staubus Gym. With a challenging schedule ahead, especially in District 4-5A, it was probably a win...

Both squads kick off the season this weekend, the baseball team with a four-game LSC series at St. Edward’s from Friday through Sunday and the softball team in the RMAC/LSC crossover tournament at Albuquerque on Friday and Saturday. The conference released its preseason polls last week, and they were not kind to the Greyhounds. ENMU was picked for last place in the 13-te...

  • Plenty of scenic byways in our area

    Betty Williamson, Local columnist|Updated Feb 1, 2022

My brother in Taos told me recently about a breakfast foray he’d taken to the nearby northern New Mexico community of Tres Piedras. He asked if I’d ever been there. I pulled out the atlas and decided that I probably have not, even though I’ve wandered around a good portion of that area over the years. While I was perusing the map, I happened to notice that every road that leaves Taos in every direction is marked with those tiny green dots that atlases use to designate a “scen...

  • Opinion: Obedience isn't the ethical choice

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Updated Feb 1, 2022

Here’s something you probably don’t hear every day: I dislike obedience. Obedience is not something to be encouraged or celebrated; it’s one of the most dangerous human traits there is. Obedient people have caused far more problems than rebels. It’s not even close. The Holocaust can be laid directly at the feet of obedient people -- including people who weren’t otherwise bad, but who were obedient. It wasn’t only the Nazis and those who enabled them, their victims were also t...

  • Opinion: GOP needs to stick to legal process

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Updated Feb 1, 2022

To steal a quote from former GOP President George H.W. Bush, the Republican Party of New Mexico is in “deep do-do” these days, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to get any better anytime soon. Already the Republican Party is powerless statewide, since the Democrats control both legislative chambers as well as all statewide offices from the governor on down. But it’s recent news out of Washington, D.C., that has the state GOP stepping in its own mess. Last week the U.S. House Select Committee investigating the Jan. 6 at...

  • Opinion: Raiding trust funds will only leave state with less for the future

    Albuquerque Journal, Syndicated content|Updated Feb 1, 2022

While state legislators consider a proposal requiring financial literacy be taught in high schools, it might be a good idea if they took a class themselves in investing wisely. Just two years ago, lawmakers and Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham created a state early childhood trust fund to help pay for expanded prekindergarten and other early childhood programs. The fund received a $300 million startup infusion from the state and gets energy-related tax collections in years when total state cash reserves exceed 25% of spending...

Statistics compiled by the New Mexico Human Services Department show Curry and Roosevelt counties share some good performance in basic economic measures and both score in the middle among state counties in measures of poverty. Despite these similarities, Curry County showed a slight increase of 0.1% in population between 2010 and 2020, bringing its 2020 population to 48,793, while Roosevelt County showed a population decrease of 3.3%, for a total of 18,350 in 2020. • Pair charged in bleacher theft

    David Stevens, Publisher|Updated Feb 1, 2022

Recycling isn’t always a good idea – especially if you’re recycling property owned by someone else, without their permission. Two Clovis people are accused of stealing aluminum bleachers belonging to the city of Clovis and selling them to Clovis Recyclers. Michael Cordova, 26, and Rosa Arzola, 25, face felony charges for disposing stolen property sometime between Dec. 1 and Dec. 22. According to a criminal complaint filed Friday in Clovis’ Magistrate Court: Clovis City Parks D...

  • 'Village' stepping up for children

    Cindy Kleyn-Kennedy, Local columnist|Updated Feb 1, 2022

The famous quote, “It takes a village to raise a child,” is apparently an African proverb that exists in a wide variety of African languages across the continent. Not only has it come to be popular in our own culture, but it has also recently taken on greater significance. While things have returned to normal – albeit a new normal – we, in education, are still dealing daily with the residual effects of the pandemic. Readers may have noticed ads, job fairs, and other messagi...

  • Curry County may help fill teacher gaps

    David Stevens, Publisher|Updated Feb 1, 2022

CLOVIS -- Teachers have forfeited their planning periods to fill in for teachers who are sick. Educational assistants are being pulled away from their typical assignments to oversee classrooms. Administrators and others are stepping in to help as well, in the classroom, on the playground, in the lunch room. “An individual from our finance department taught P.E. last week,” Clovis Municipal Schools Superintendent Renee Russ said on Monday. CMS, like most other school districts...
