Bill Patton led Clovis in scoring with 14 points. 1972: The “new, exciting capless wig” was on sale for $29.95 at Wig Chateau. A newspaper advertisement proclaimed the wig offered “easy care,” wa...

  • 'Election' sparks lively debate

    Rob Langrell|Updated Jan 22, 2017

There was a mountain of debate last week over recent election results. You could find ranting posts on Facebook, attacks and criticism on Twitter and an abundance of comments and complaints posted across your choice of websites. Objections were lodged, while others posted support of their winning candidate. Televisions were abuzz with coverage. Talk show hosts, pundits and guests bantered and argued and tried to weigh in on the ramifications of the latest ballot results. In a...

  • Elida, San Jon split district games

    David Norton|Updated Jan 22, 2017

ELIDA — Despite playing a pretty competitive second half, the Elida boys basketball team found itself in too much of a first-half hole Saturday night and couldn't overcome San Jon, falling 57-40. The Coyotes (6-5, 2-1) were led by the combo of Daniel Lee and Jacob Thurman, who filled up the stat sheet with 18 and 15 points, respectively. The Tigers (2-14, 0-3) were led by Kaul Burton with 15 points. "Our game plan was to try to run our pace," Elida coach Logan Turnbow said, "...

  • Have fun with spring fashion

    Dnieka Hartsfield|Updated Jan 22, 2017

Spring begins March 20, but it can't come fast enough for this season’s greatest trends. Case one, according to Vogue magazine, is "colorful sunglasses and retro florals." But don't worry, you don’t have to cast your dark tent and mirrored lenses to the side because you'll still see these classic looks. But the latest "groovy" lens craze just so happens to be blush pinks, turquoise and yellows. Another throwback style that has graced the runways for spring 2017 is florals tha...

  • It's mouse hunting season in the country

    Karl Terry|Updated Jan 22, 2017

As the dawn was breaking over the kitchen windowsill, I reached into the shadows for the first trap in my trap line. Sure enough, I had my first plew in what was to be a long season. If you’ve ever lived in the country near an open field, you know the season I’m referring to is mouse trapping season. The little vermin have a bad habit of moving inside when the weather starts to get cold. Some years and some places are worse than others. Why I recall a winter on the saddle bel...

  • Commission focus on smaller projects

    Douglas Clark|Updated Jan 22, 2017

CLOVIS — Heeding the advice of a former city commission and current state legislator, the Clovis City Commission has decided to go small or go home with its capital outlay list. On the advice of Rep. Randy Crowder, R-Clovis, the commission voted 7-1 to prioritize small-scale projects on its Industrial Capital Improvement Plan. The ICIP’s top three priorities are a brush fire truck, a fire rescue truck/pumper and repairs for Sugarbeet Road. “We’re all aware of the problems financially with the state, the issues being faced b...

  • Passionate, resourceful, Tillie Shaw

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Jan 22, 2017

CLOVIS — After her first retirement only lasted four years, everybody who worked with Tillie Shaw assumed she'd never have a second one. She never officially did. The longtime chief executive officer for the Clovis Board of Realtors died Wednesday at 99. She had been with the board for 37 years — first from 1975 until 2007. After she came out of retirement in 2011, she worked at least part-time for the board until a few months ago when her health deteriorated. History wil...

  • Enrollment up, crime low at CCC, says president

    Updated Jan 22, 2017

Editor's note: Clovis Community College President Becky Rowley discussed several topics as part of a periodic series checking up on issues related to the university. A 2015 report showed Clovis Community College as having minimal campus crime. How has CCC fared in terms of incidents in the last two years, and how is the campus' continuing safety ensured? We have continued to have the same extremely low campus crime rate. One of the things that I think we have sort of in our...

  • I don't get some things in sports

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Jan 22, 2017

I got a call last Sunday from my dad. "Why did Dallas call time out before Green Bay's winning field goal?" I explained to him the process of icing a kicker, meaning you use a time out to make him think about that important play. I also told him it works just as well most of the time as it did Sunday for Dallas, whose hashtag went from #FinishThisFight to #FinishedTonight. That's one thing I understand about sports in 2017. Here are three things I don't. • I'm glad Ivan R...

  • More than one broken heart here

Rabiah Memon is worried about her sister. That’s because Mariah Memon lives a world away, in more ways than one, and fears for her safety. Mariah has stopped going to work because a co-worker who once wanted to marry her is now threatening to harm her, according to police in Karachi, Pakistan. Rabiah said Kamran Aziz was arrested on Thursday, but it’s not clear how long he may be detained. “It’s been a rollercoaster ride for her the last few days,” said Rabiah, who graduated...

  • I may disagree, but respect office

    Wendel Sloan|Updated Jan 22, 2017

I am disappointed in Obama. He was supposed to declare martial law and serve a third term. Until Friday’s inauguration, I expected the military (ours, not Russia’s) to swarm the podium and assume control. Spoiled by Obama’s wit, intelligence, demeanor, lack of scandals, nuanced responses and measured approaches, I now feel like a guppy in an aquarium of blowfish. On the Portales Politics and Current Events Facebook page, one High Plains luminary said Obama was the “wors...

  • Peaceful power transition an American virtue

    Albuquerque Journal|Updated Jan 22, 2017

On Friday, almost 241 years after our nation declared its independence from Great Britain, the United States of America inaugurated its 45th president. This long-standing, orderly and peaceful transfer of power from arguably the most powerful person on Earth to another is rare in the world. It is a large part of what makes America great. Today, after a bitter election cycle, Donald J. Trump has taken office, promising he “will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my a...
