The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 1, 2017

KEARNEY, Neb. — Former Eastern New Mexico University football coach Josh Lynn was hired on Wednesday to the same position at Division II Nebraska-Kearney. Lynn replaces Josh Lamberson, who led the Lopers the past two seasons. Lynn becomes just the fifth head coach at UNK since 1955. “What I am excited about is the passion of the current athletic administration to continue to build a program for this university and community,” Lynn said. “I’m committed to ensuring our student-athletes are successful on the field, in the class...

  • Coyotes pull away late from Cats

The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 1, 2017

ROSWELL — For 3 1/2 quarters on Thursday night, Clovis High’s boys pretty much gave Roswell High all it wanted. The roof finally caved in on the Wildcats, but not until late in a 70-47 loss to the Coyotes. CHS boys coach Scott Robinson said it was a step in the right direction. “We got off to a good start,” he said. “That was a focal point for us this week. “We’ve got to get to where we play four (full) quarters, and we haven’t been able to do that yet. We always seem to have about a quarter that gives us trouble.” Clovis has...

The Staff of The News|Updated Jan 5, 2017

SILVER CITY — It took them a while, but the Eastern New Mexico University men’s basketball team is finally on the board in the Lone Star Conference. The Greyhounds (7-8, 1-4) got the key run in a game of runs, breaking a tie when senior guard Javaan Mumtaz hit a pair of free throws with 6:05 left to kick off a 10-2 surge, and ENMU held on late for a 78-71 win over the Mustangs (2-11, 0-5). It was the third win in a row for the Hounds, and their first conference road win since beating Cameron at Lawton, Oklahoma, in Feb...

  • Let's redefine 'crime' - and punish it

    David Stevens|Updated Jan 5, 2017

Am I young enough to believe in revolution Am I strong enough to get down on my knees and pray Am I high enough on the chain of evolution To respect myself, and my brother and my sister And perfect myself in my own peculiar way — Pilgrim’s Progress by Kris Kristofferson Contrary to popular belief, I am not a card-carrying libertarian. First, libertarians are not organized enough to issue cards. Second, I lean too far left of anarchy to qualify anyway. But if political lab...

  • Join the bird count for fun and science

    Betty Williamson|Updated Jan 5, 2017

Today marks the last day of the annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count, a mammoth citizen science effort to keep track of numbers and species of birds across half the globe, and one that has happened, believe it or not, for the last 117 years. Thanks to Grant Beauprez, a lesser prairie chicken biologist with the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish stationed for the past decade in eastern New Mexico, local birders are part of that effort. It is one of the nicest traditions of t...

  • Lawmaker aims to alter evaluations

    Douglas Clark|Updated Jan 5, 2017

A New Mexico lawmaker wants to change the manner in which the state’s teachers are evaluated. Sen. Howie Morales is the originator of Senate Bill 34, which officials said would practically eliminate the current evaluation process — which allows for 50 percent weighing student achievement, 25 percent for multiple measures such as teacher attendance and 25 percent observations. Meanwhile, under the measure introduced by Morales, a body comprised of teachers, superintendents and various unions would take a look at how tea...
