    More than 100 eastern New Mexico residents packed the North Annex of the Clovis-Carver Library Tuesday to get educated about the lesser prairie chicken and what it means to the region. The bird is native to New Mexico, as well as four other states, and has been identified by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a candidate for federal listing as a "threatened" species.   • Clovis spelling champ fails to advance to semifinals

    Clovis' Ariel Kokoricha performed perfectly onstage in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. However, the Clovis Christian School sixth-grader to be will not be advancing to today's semifinals because she did not earn enough points in a formula that combined Wednesday's onstage rounds with a computer test that included a section on vocabulary for the first time.   • International cheese industry professionals visit Southwest Cheese

    Cheese industry professionals from all over the world descended on Clovis this week to learn about United States cheese production and operations at Southwest Cheese. Visitors from Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Egypt, the Philippines, and Lebanon toured the cheese plant and a local dairy, and also attended several educational sessions.
